Civil Liberties: The course is Legal and Constitutional Issues, it’s a course requirement for Homeland Security

The course is Legal and Constitutional Issues, it’s a course requirement for Homeland Security. The course consist of analyzing court cases and law. Here is the topic: Evaluate how much of a threat state secrets doctrine is to civil liberties. The Jeppesen-Dataplan case has a wealth of material to start writing and which cases to look up for your research. As much as possible, try to write an argument. If not an argument, at least an in-depth analysis. Do not simply write out general information about your topic so that what you turn in is merely a Wikipedia. I want you to think critically. And speaking of Wikipedia, NEVER cite wikipedia as a source. Wikipedia is a great starting point to get general information to start, but do not use it for much more than that.

So far we have studied the ethics of abortion, sexual morality, gay marriage, animal rights, and euthanasia

So far we have studied the ethics of abortion, sexual morality, gay marriage, animal rights, and euthanasia. Pick one of these areas. Then, review a debate between two (or at most three) authors. First, carefully present the authors’ views. What are the authors’ main conclusions? What are the premises that support these conclusions? What are some reasons to believe that the premises are true? Next, object to one author’s argument. Why is the argument invalid (the conclusion does not follow from the premises) or why is one of the premises false? Finally, conclude by explaining the significance of your finding (i.e., how does it influence our moral thinking or apply to public policy?).

Length ~1000 words, standard format, works cited page (there is no expectation that you use outside sources), and double-spaced. Please do not use silly fonts, strange spacing, irregular margins, etc.

The Late Policy: This paper must be submitted in class paper (stapled) on 12/5. If, due to some extenuating circumstance, please email your paper directly to me at the start of class on 12/5. Late papers lose one full letter grade for each day late. Papers will not be accepted after 12/9.

Intro:

Functions of the introduction: motivate the project (why does this paper matter), thesis (what I will argue), roadmap (what are the steps taken in this paper),

Thesis: you may bold or italicize your thesis. It is appropriate to say, “I will argue…” or “This paper will argue…”

The thesis is a contract between you and the reader.

Criteria of a good thesis: 1) specific 2) controversial 3) plausible (defensible) 4) value-added (novel contribution).

Example of a bad thesis: Schulmann thinks gay marriage is wrong. (Vague, non-controversial, no new contribution).

Better thesis: I will argue that Horkheimer and Adorno’s conception of a monolithic cultural apparatus is implausible given the practical limitations of generating a unified apparatus for the production of culture.

Body:

Clearly convey the position(s) you are considering. What is the central point of the author? How do they support this central point?

Transitions and Signposts: tell the reader what has been stated and what will be argued next. “It has been shown that X holds position Y for reasons A and B. Next, objections to A and B will be considered.”

Original contribution: after clearly presenting the positions, provide an original critique (e.g., show why the argument doesn’t follow from the premises or why one of the premises is false). Thought experiments maybe useful here.

Basic Structure: Intro, position 1, position 2, original contribution (objection), conclusion

General Tips: Clarity is King/Queen, avoid rhetorical questions, use peer review, and explain!

Grading Criteria:

Clarity of Exposition (40%)– proper spelling grammar and syntax, well organized, fluid and logical transitions

Accuracy of Presentation (40%) – careful and accurate recapitulation of the author’s argument

Original Contribution (20%) – substantive, well-developed, original

“[The] rapidity of technological change […] [is] positively related to the probability that organizational members will recognize entrepreneurial opportunities” (Ireland et al., 2008: 30). Critically discuss this proposition.

Showing that you understand particular theories; applying theory correctly; providing evidence to back up your arguments; comparing and discussing different points of view; critical discussion – not just description; and not simply regurgitating lecture notes.
You should look to: draw on previous empirical studies, theoretical papers, visiting speakers, case studies and your interviews with managers.

Vaccines and the developing world. You may want to consider the scientists as health care providers and as researchers interested in studying other contagious diseases and developing treatments or vaccines

What are the interests of the scientists as sciences here (i.e., what are their goals with respect to being able to conduct scientific research and/or communicate scientific findings and/or participate in a scientific community)?
What are the interests of the non-scientists?
How are the interests of each group reflected in the norms (i.e., the standards for ethical conduct) they identify as being important here?
How might conflicts in these competing sets of norms be reconciled (or otherwise dealt with)?

Here’s a rough strategy for using your allotted words effectively:

Setting up the issue (what is the questions, who is on which side, what big claim does each side make) about 300 words.
The scientists’ interests about 150 words.
The nonscientists’ interests about 150 words.
What the scientists think ought to be done and why about 100 words.
What the non-scientists think ought to be done and why about 100 words.
A strategy for resolving the conflict about 100 words.
The first of these (the set-up) is the section that will draw most heavily on your research. The other sections should focus on your analysis of the matter. Your task is to diagnose the conflicting interests at the heart of the matter, to explain how these lead the sides to identify different actions that would be best, and to illuminate any overlapping interests that might lead to a resolution of the conflict.

The materials manager is very familiar with older material requirements planning (MRP) systems, as well as more integrated manufacturing resource planning (MRPII) systems

The materials manager is very familiar with older material requirements planning (MRP) systems, as well as more integrated manufacturing resource planning (MRPII) systems. In fact, he is quite proud of the way the MRPII system works; his entire team has worked hard and has achieved schedule accuracy of over 98% and inventory accuracy of over 97%. He is also proud that as a result of this kind of change to the more modern MRPII systems, the firm’s inventory turnover has improved from 2.1 to 4.2; quite an achievement in his eyes and the CEO’s.

He asked you to meet with his own materials management team to discuss the following specific points:
•Your understanding of the pros and cons of MRPII systems, citing at least two Web sources.
•How could any new system be better than an MRPII system?
