Understanding Cognitive Moral Development

Molly has been a local newspaper reporter for over 10 years. She learned that Joe
Thompson, a candidate forgovernor, had been arrested for shoplifting 20 years earlier.
She also learned that early in his life, Thompson went through a confused period when
he did things he later regretted. The shoplifting was treated as a minor offense and
removed from his record. Since then, Thompson has had a distinguished career
helping people and leading important community projects. Many people consider him
to be the best candidate who will likely go on to other important leadership positions.
Molly wonders whether she should write a story about Joe’s earlier troubles that could
ruin his chance to win.
Can you characterize Molly’s thinking in terms of cognitive moral development
levels? Which of the following questions represents preconventional, conventional,
and principled thinking?
& Are there any laws against writing the story?
& Would getting “the scoop” help or hurt my career?
& If I don’t publish the story, wouldn’t another reporter write the story anyway?
& What action would best serve society in the long term?
& How would my boss react if I wrote, or didn’t write, the story?
& Aren’treportersexpectedtoreportallthenewsregardlessofthecircumstances?
& Would Thompson pay me not to write the story?
& Would the election process be more just with or without reporting the story?

Military leader who was confronted with a strategic challenge

Choosing a military leader who was confronted with a strategic challenge. An example is General Robert E. Lee with Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg, PA. Consider the

critical thinking that informed the strategy during the chosen conflict and apply your assessment to the leader’s approach. Based upon your critical thinking, would

you have taken the same approach, or would you have chosen a different strategy?

Here are your instructions for this M1A1 assignment that will form the foundation of your Essay 1

•Create a research question from this military leader’s situation and your perspective. For example: ◦Situation and leader: Caesar must cross the Rubicon River and

enter Rome with his army, considered an act of war and forbidden by the Senate. .
◦Research question: “Knowing what we do now about the outcome, would I recommend that Caesar cross the river and enter Rome?” .
◦Briefly identify the critical thinking skills from your reading that you will be applying to analyze fully this situation and the leader’s actions. .
.
•Create a short (2+ pages) outline for this research question detailing how you will examine both perspectives (yours and the leader’s) objectively and then use

research facts and data to arrive at a responsible conclusion. ◦List 2 academic resources you will be using, one for each perspective. Give complete APA style

references for each. .

“Fields of Service” and how the mezzo layer of social welfare defines need, shapes and implements policy, and then, with those legal requirements in place, provides and delivers services to meet those acknowledged needs

The second section of this course looks at “Fields of Service” and how the mezzo layer of social welfare defines need, shapes and implements policy, and then, with those legal requirements in place, provides and delivers services to meet those acknowledged needs. These services are provided privately and publicly from agencies

and organizations based locally, regionally, provincially, nationally and internationally.

Your assignment requires you to arrange a visit to a social welfare agency/organization and interview one of its representatives. By now, you should be able to

determine what a social service agency is. If you have questions, do not hesitate to ask me.

(You do not have to contact an agency, instead you may reference other research notes as information acquired from the agency)

The purpose of the agency visit is to gather information from the interview, and any written material such as annual reports, organizational charts, program

descriptions, funding sources, promotional brochures, etc as well as drawing upon concepts from the “Fields of Service” section of the course (notes and text).

From the material collected, you are required to a paper describing the details of that organization. The paper should address the following themes:

1. type of agency (non-profit, public, commercial) and level (macro, mezzo, micro), agency origin and brief history,
2. purpose and function, how is it part of the appropriate “Field of Service”,
3. organizational framework funding,
4. method of service delivery,
5. pertinent legislation that affects the agency,
6. effectiveness and efficiency review,
7. your thinking about the future needs and direction of the agency,
8. bibliography and citing.

The organization you select to study will likely fall into one of the 7 areas discussed in Part II of the course notes, “Fields of Service”. That can be a helpful

place to start and you should bring in appropriate concepts from the course notes and the text in your agency description in addition to information you gather from

your research. (I HAVE ATTACHED THIS FILE BELOW)

Remember to cite your sources (APA, MLA or footnotes) and bibliography – this is a requirement for your paper to be read.

The internet can be a useful source for information about most agencies.

As well, reviewing the course notes “Fields of Service” section and the Text, Chapter 14, “Agencies in General” and Chapter 15 “Industries and the Provision of Social

Services”, can give you additional overview information and help you prepare your questions to adequately cover the required content.

Analyse a television show, news show or advertising campaign

In this 1500 word essay, you are asked to analyse a television show, news show or advertising campaign. Your analysis must include a discussion of its innovation or

lack of innovation, the nature of its production techniques, its main or recurring themes, and the underlying social messages (hegemonic values) it conveys; you must

also provide an overall evaluation of the show.

I would like to do this essay on a new television series called “Forever”. This show is about a man who cannot die and has lived for 200 years. There are flashbacks

throughout out each episode to previous periods. One particular episode that I found interesting was “The Pugilist Break” an episode in which the plot takes place in

the inner city of New York and shows how at times history can repeat can repeat itself. How some things may have changed but the poor are still often at the mercy of

the rich at times although of course in this case the community triumphs over the rich land developer unlike the poor immigrants of the past.
Please try to include a Canadian perspective or reference when possible if relevant.
