Episodes Essay: Across what media does the episode present itself? Reviews? Films?

You are required to select by a case study by the instructor of architectural ‘episodes,’ post 1968. The episode can be an architectural event, publication, declaration, display etc. that you feel has been influential on the contemporary discipline of architecture.

You should provide some form of how this episode circulated in architectural discourse (in what forms was it written about, documented, and made visible/public) and the influence it has had on the discipline. As a base level students are to research their chosen episode according to the following questions:
1. Format of Display: Across what media does the episode present itself? Reviews? Films?
2. Participants: Who is involved and what are their arguments, and what are their affiliations?
3. Content: What is the theoretical topic framed by the episode?
4. Genealogies: How might you present a theoretical genealogy of this episode? What previous events or discussions might it relate to?

Students should form a 2000-word response to this event and how it relates to/effected/influenced the discipline of architecture. The response should be framed as a mini-essay with reasoned argument, demonstrated research the case study topic and context, and citations according to proper academic conventions.

This is primarily so that you find a topic that is interesting and productive, but also so that you further your familiarity with what is out there event-wise in architecture.

The following examples of what an acceptable episode might be as a guide only:

Writing tips
Academic voice
● Clarity, using terminology relevant to the topic don’t
rightclick
and choose a word from
the thesaurus
● consider the words you use and the annotations they have some
words are more
‘loaded’ in different contexts. For example, in academic writing, saying a statement is
‘true’ means you personally are aligning with it. If you mean to say it is ‘established and
accepted in common discourse’ that is a clearer way to say something can be
understood as relevant without showing that you have definitively aligned yourself with the
idea. This gives you room to move and explain your position and the definition itself for
your own use.
● Strong (minimal first person usage, not passive take
responsibility for the statements
that you make, just make sure you support them with the texts.)
● Non convoluted (bigger words are not always better, in weak writing they often show a
lack of understanding of the concepts beneath them better
to use simpler words that
clearly communicate the concept)
● Best case scenario it
feels like I can hear you reading the essay to me when I read it
Sustaining your position throughout
● Establishing your position early on
● Returning and reinforcing your position
● Using the texts to support your argument or highlight inconsistencies amongst the
multiple texts
● You don’t have to agree with the ideas within the sources that you use, but you do have to
agree with the arguments you make! It is your position and argument after all, so you
should be agreeing with everything you have chosen to write! This is where you need to
be critical of the sources, use them. Being critical doesn’t mean discrediting or
disagreeing you
can most definitely agree, but you have to state why and how this is
relevant to your argument/position.
Structure and paragraphs
● Intro, body, conclusion (of sorts)
● Statement of point, textual example, explain example, return to position, lead to next point
● Uts Harvard referencing is used for a reasonif
you read a sentence with it used
correctly, you should be able to thinly understand the context of the writer immediately as
well as understanding the writers placement within your argument. Having the date and
source title or writer in brackets reminds the reader where the comment comes from,
giving the statement more authority or strength, as well as helping to avoid plagiarising
another’s work. It is better to credit another for the work than to pretend it is your own idea
it
reads differently to your own style of writing and is obvious when you read it alongside
your own statements.
Grammar and spelling
● Editing and rereading work before submission do
not rely on autocorrect, it inevitably
changes half your writing without you knowing (especially when writing lengthier texts)
Synthesising your critique of multiple sources
● Always understand the weekly log is not understanding 35
texts independently, we are
analysing the sustained idea present in every source and making comparisons through
the analysis to explain the varied positions of each writer in relation to the concept/theory.
Your position is therefore vital in the analysis, as you are determining the way the reader
should be interpreting the texts together.
● Your collation and analysis of the texts is new regurgitating
the concepts to show that
you understand them is not presenting anything new
A checklist I would make before submissions:
● Reread the essay ALOUD. It highlights so many issues immediately!
● Double checking that the sources have been explored in relation to one another. If they
are entirely isolated within my argument, I will ensure I have understood them correctly
and that my position is potentially highlighting disparities between them.
● Check uts Harvard is used correctly
When you can’t seem to meet the word count:
● Make sure you are explaining the relevance of the references and quotes you have
incorporated into your argument. Don’t assume I am reading the quote the say way as
you, your position and argument is meant to determine my interpretation
● Make sure you are covering the concepts from every source.
● Make sure your analysis is introducing your sources clearly both as individual references,
as well as collectively part of an argument.
● Ensure you are addressing all of your points/arguments, not just one. VERY common for
people to mainly write about one part of the readings/source/case study and forgetting
the other points that can be made
When you can’t stay within the word count:
● Check you’re not doubling up on your arguments. Sometimes I might find myself making
the same point twice, or overelaborating
on one point without realising. This can
sometimes make your argument uneven and lopsided
● Check you’re not fluffing around when making a point. As much as elaborate writing can
create a mood, voice and narrative within a piece of writing too
much makes it a chore
to read and can confuse the points coming across. Ernest Hemingway is a great
example of writing (fiction) in a concise, simple but beautiful way.
● Don’t feel like you need to explain absolutely everything about every text. You are filtering
what is necessary for your argument, not so much showing that you understand the text
intimately ( your deep analysis of the relevant points should demonstrate this)
● You should not be counting the quotes within the word count they
are excluded. I often
have open a separate document with just the quotes in it, so I can deduct the word
number from the total in the finished essay.
Finally, enjoy writing your work!

Cross Cultural Death and the Dying process

The purpose of this assignment is to compare/contrast mainstream American culture in the 21st century with another culture in terms of how each responds to death and the dying process. The “other” culture can be a group from the past (for instance, the Greeks, the Vikings, etc.) or it can be a contemporary group in another part of the world. While you may not use any of the groups described in Chapter 5 (Hispanic Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, or American Indians), the outline followed by the author of the textbook may provide some useful topics to consider for your paper.

Organizational structure

After finishing with the background page and readings, go to the following interview with Rosabeth Moss Kanter, who is a renowned Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, and an influential business advisor. Among other things, in this interview she talks about the evolution of changes in organizational structure in the past decades, and the link to employees’ well-being and functioning.

Required Reading

Both of the following articles can be found in the EBSCO Business Source Complete database.

Puffer, S. (2004) Changing organizational structures: An interview with Rosabeth Moss Kanter. Academy of Management Executive, 18(2).

The following article looks at changing organizational structures as open systems and the effect on managers.

Buhler, P. M. (2011). Changing organizational structures and their impact on managers. Supervision, 72(2), 24-26.

Assignment

Write a 4- to 5-page critique answering the questions below.
1.An organization’s structure can have significant effects on its members. What might those effects be? Analyze the behavioral implications of different organizational designs and use at least three examples, SAS being one of them.
2.Is it possible to generalize and say that a certain structure is better than others? That is, is there a structure that is superior in terms of its effects on its members?

Keys to the Assignment

The key aspects of this assignment that should be covered in your paper are:
•Define the problem: Explain the relationship between organizational structure and human behaviors.
•Analyze the cause: Analyze how specific organizational designs can elicit predictable attitudes and motivations. Be sure to use SAS as one of your examples (refer back to Module 2).
•Propose a solution: Take a position on Question 2 and defend it with references to the concepts in the readings in this module and any previous modules that you find relevant.

Background reading
Organizational Culture

Have you ever observed how some people just seem to “fit in” to an organization better than others? Have you noticed that it seems that they are the ones who are the most successful? Did you ever wonder why? Read the following material on organizational culture for some insights into what culture is, what it does, how it is formed, and how it is taught to newcomers in the organization. The material on organizational culture type may be particularly helpful as you prepare your Module 5 assignments.

Organizational Structure and Design

An organizational structure defines how job tasks are formally divided, grouped, and coordinated. According to Robbins and Judge (2010) managers need to address six key elements when they design their organization’s structure:

Work specialization – the extent to which activities are subdivided into separate jobs.

Departmentalization – the basis on which jobs will be grouped together.

Chain of command – the people who individuals and groups report to.

Span of control – the number of individuals that a manager can direct efficiently and effectively.

Centralization and de-centralization – the locus of decision-making authority.

Formalization – the extent to which there will be rules and regulations to direct employees and managers.

Three common organizational designs are: the simple structure, the bureaucracy, and the matrix structure.

The simple structure is characterized by a low degree of departmentalization, a wide span of control, authority that is centralized in a single person, and little formalization.

The bureaucracy is an organizational structure with highly routine operating tasks achieved through specialization, highly formalized regulations and rules, tasks that are grouped into functional departments, centralized authority, narrow span of control, and decision making that follows the chain of command.

The matrix structure creates dual lines of authority and combines functional and product departmentalization.

There are of course other, newer structures that help their organizations develop an advantage over their competitors. The virtual organization and the boundaryless organization are among these new structures. The virtual organization is a relatively small, core organization that outsources major business functions. The boundaryless organization has teams instead of departments, and aspires to have as flat a hierarchy as possible.

Another classification of organizational designs focuses on mechanistic versus organic design. The mechanistic design is characterized by extensive departmentalization, high formalization, a limited information network, and centralization. The organic design is characterized by low formalization, flat hierarchy and the use of cross-hierarchical and cross-functional teams, free flow of information, and decentralization. An organization’s structure can have significant effects on its members and its ability to execute its strategy. In this module you will try to understand those effects and analyze the behavioral implications of different organizational designs.

Analysis of Personal and Organizational Ethics and Values between For-Profit and Not-for-Profit Organizations

Final Paper – Analysis of Personal and Organizational Ethics and Values between For-Profit and Not-for-Profit Organizations

Scenario:
You are an ethnographic researcher writing an article for a popular organizational behavior research journal. Your purpose is to identify key problems related to business ethics in a Not-for-Profit and For- Profit organization. In this potential article please complete the following activities:
1. Outline the company profile of the not for profit World Food Company (WFP): USA to analyze (consult the week #2 journal for the information you should/could include). Explain the ethical dilemma that it faced or is currently facing. Analyze the way that it responded to this ethical dilemma and outline the legal, social, or political outcomes that emerged after the actions were taken..
2. Outline the company profile of the for profit company Starbuck Corporation to analyze (consult the week #2 journal for the information you should/could include). Explain the ethical dilemma that it faced or is currently facing. Analyze the way that it responded to this ethical dilemma and outline the legal, social, or political outcomes that emerged after the actions were taken.
3. In part three of your paper, please provide your personal reflections on the ethical actions that were taken in relation to the problem. Evaluate those actions from your own ethical standpoint. Use these questions to inspire your analysis: Did the company respond in a morally responsible way? Did the company respond in a morally irresponsible way? Did the company create the ethical dilemma or was the dilemma the outcome of an unforeseen force? Could the company have done more? Who was responsible for the problem and how could it have been prevented?
o Remember that when you analyze something you should present logical reasoning and factual evidence to support your position. Do not merely answer these questions using simplistic yes and no answers. Instead, you should always support your position with logical argumentation and evidence that explains why you believe what you believe.
4. In part 4 of your paper please create a critique of the actions of these companies based on two of the philosophical theories that you studied earlier in the course (deontology, utilitarianism, egoism, virtue ethics, moral relativism). Determine which moral theory the company appears to be abiding by in relation to this issue. Explain the attributes of the decision that make you believe that this is the ethical perspective of the company. If you agree with the ethical theory of the company, explain why this is the best ethical position on the issue. If you do not, explain which ethical position would be better to utilize in this situation and why you believe that this position is better. Here are some sample questions to guide your thinking:
o Which ethical theory did the company use in making its decision? Was it the best? Why or why not?
o Which ethical theory should the company have used? Why?
o What is the ideal relationship between bad or suffering and profit?
o What does it mean to run an ethical business?
o What is the best way for a company to maintain its competitive edge and contribute to overall good or happiness in relation to its workers and customers?
Logistics and Length Requirements
Your paper needs to be 10 double-spaced pages, not counting the cover page and the reference list. You papers should abide by APA requirements. You must use at least ten scholarly sources. Here is a breakdown of the page length requirements you should abide by as you complete this project.
