Thesis Statements
Focus your Topic
What is it?
Focusing a research topic is narrowing (orsometimes broadening) a topic so that you can demonstrate a good understandingof it, including enough examples and important details, within the size limitsof the project you are required to produce. You need to satisfy bothyourself and your teacher that you know what you are talking about. Ifyour teacher gives you no limits, make them for yourself. You don’t want tospend your life on this, at least not right now.
Why should I do it?
This is the #1 biggest pitfall in theresearch process. If you pick a topic that is too big, you will not only havetrouble selecting what to include from a huge selection of material available, you will probably leave out some critical information that will make itapparent (especially to your teacher) that you don’t really know what you aretalking about.
If, on the other hand, you pick a topicthat is too narrow, you won’t find enough to write about and end up repeatingyourself to fill 6 pages (which doesn’t go over very well with teacherseither, by the way).
The process of focusing a topic takespractice, so be patient with yourself. It is challenging when you don’t knowtoo much about a topic. It will get easier as your knowledge base increases. Rememberthat the research process is a recursive onewhich means that you may need to revisit your topic choice more than once ifyou find it doesn’t work out. Luckily there are some strategiesand methods to help you through this critically important part of theprocess. Read on!
How do I do it?
There are different ways to focus yourtopic. In the Related Links at the bottom of the page you can clickon some different methods. Whichever method you choose (and you maydo a combination of them) try to pick something that interests you in some way.Even if the overall subject doesn’t seem interesting, you can pick aninteresting angle on it.

Choose five prompts from the listbelow and write a sample thesis statement:
Say you have to do a research project about World War II, and youdon’t know a thing about it, nor are you at all interested in it. Try to find asubtopic that connects to your interests.
Ifyou like cars, try comparing the land vehicles used by the Germans and theAmericans.
If you likefashion, look at women’s fashions during the war and how they were influencedby military uniforms and the shortage of certain materials.
If you likeanimals, look at the use of dogs by the US Armed Forces.
If you likepuzzles and brain teasers, look at the fascinating topic of decoding secretmessages.
If you like music, find out what types of music American teenagers were listening to during thewar years.
If you are apacifist, find out what the anti-war movement was like during the war in anycountry.
Find out whatwas happening during the war on your birth date.
Find out if anyof your relatives fought in the war and research that time and place.

Use this free-write as the basis forwriting a poem of 10-15 lines that allows the reader to share some aspect of thisscene. Throughout, your goal is to pay close attention to interesting andfresh diction and to avoid clichés. Remember that your poem should concentrateon nouns and verbs and omit as many of the little “cluttering”prose words as possible without sounding telegraphic. In a fifteen-minute free-writing session, describe both that place and one or two of the mental journeys you’ve takenfrom there. (Don’t limit yourself: This could be a special spot by a stream, achair where you read good books, or even a movie theater or an art gallery.) Whenyou’re through, go back and circle those words and phrases that do the best jobof capturing the concrete, sensory detail of both the place and the experiencesyou wrote about.

Use these, and other, key words and phrasesto write a poem of 10-15 lines. Remember how virtually every line of TedKoozer’s poem about the salesman included concrete imagery? Free write about this topic for fifteen minutes, and then go back and circle significant words and phrases. Next, draft outseveral short test lines in which you end the line on one of these significantwords – even if the word leads right into the next line.

Use this free-write as the basis forwriting a poem of 12-15 lines that pays close attention to line endings, and thepoem should use syllabics – i.e.,each line should contain the same number of syllables.

Be sure that your final draft poem:
•    ends each line on a “significant” word you want to emphasize,
•    includes a combination of run-over and end-stopped lines,
•    contains the same number of syllables for each line, and
•    remembers to pay close attention to fresh, crisp diction, compressed language, and a variety of imagery (description, metaphor, simile, and metonymy).

James Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues,”

Throughout most of James Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues,” the narrator beleives that he and his younger brother are opposites: he is mature, responsible adult whereas Sonny is the rebellious, irresponsible child. His trip to the jazz club to hear Sonny play changes that simplistic view. How does that experience change the narrator’s views on what defines his brother, himself, or any of us?

what are the benefits of pornography

Paper two:  Come up with your OWN research.  The second assignment is a research proposal.
The first thing you need to do is to find a question.  Questions I’ve asked myself are “what are the benefits of pornography”, “why are people so mean” “what do people really getting out of inflicting pain on others”.  There are a million questions out there to be answered.  My only limitation is that you stay away from questions like “does listening to music while studying help you study”.  The answer is no.  It hurts studying a lot, and every student asks this same question.  Find a question you want to answer about how people work.  How they interact, how they communicate, or how or why they behave in certain ways.  Observe the world, ask questions, and then propose a way to answer those questions.
Of course, this IS a developmental class, so in addition to keeping this involved in psychology, I want you to keep the research proposal involved with development of humans.    This could be something involving any of the many stages of development – it can be something as simple as testing someone’s theory, such as erikson’s last stage of human development, or it can be something deeper – we spoke of bullying in a discussion section, perhaps you have a theory as to why some people grow into bullies or victims, and you can test out your theory on this.

The first thing you’ll need to do obviously, after you find a good question to answer, is to do some research on it.  Internet research is fine.  But find a few sources.  You might find out that your question has been answered so thoroughly that there is no reason to propose research on it.  Do people really need 8 hours of sleep? Even a quick google search will find the answer to that question.  So do a little research on it, try to find sources you consider more valuable or credible, and then write an introduction, just like you read in the article, giving a small background on the topic at hand.  This will be the first half of your paper.  It is called the “literature review” section.  As far as finding good material goes, there is something called “google scholar”.  Just type scholar into a google search and you’ll find it, and there are tons of articles there.  I also have access to most articles, so if you want to read something that you can’t find yourself, just give me a day or two and I’ll come up with it and send it to you.

Now that you’ve picked apart someone else’s research, go ahead and come up with your own.  All those problems you saw with their research?  Try to make a research plan that doesn’t involve them.  How are you going to answer the question?  And how are you going to avoid the problems that come up?

For example, many people mentioned that the article they read used a limited sample of people, so it was not generalizable.  How will your research get a better sample?  Keep in mind, if you wish to work with kids, you’re going to have to figure out how to recruit kids.  And get their parent’s permission.  If you want to ask a bigger sample, how will you get them to participate?

I’ll give another example.  Most studies you found wound up with mostly white people.  Many people mention this as a drawback.  But are you only interested in studying blacks or Hispanics?  Blacks are only 12 percent of the American population, so if you get more than that in your study, are you no longer representative of the population at large?  Is it right to artificially select more minorities so that you can represent them, even though at that point you won’t have a random sample anymore and are basically just doing a focus group?
In other times, college freshmen are used simply because the researcher has access to them.  You can assume with your research that like other researchers, if you were to go through with it, you’d have access to college freshmen taking intro courses.  Any other sample you’re going to have to validate not only WHY you need that population, but how you’re going to get them.

There are plenty of problems to encounter in some research.  How are you going to measure something?  Let’s say you want to measure how emotionally needy someone is… and you have a theory that emotionally needy people tend to get divorced more often because they’re hard to live with.  Interesting idea, but how are you going to measure how “needy” someone is?  And then, once you figure that out, how are you going to find people to survey?  You need a population of people who are older, so that they’ve had the opportunity to be divorced.  What age would be good?  How would you find them, how would you entice them to take your survey?  This “methods” section, explaining how you’re going to do the research, will be the last half of your paper.

You’ll not have to put in results, because this is a proposal, not a finished project.  You can refer to your research as “the proposed research” (instead of the more informal “my plan”, “my idea”, or “what I want to do”).  You won’t have to put in math, because that’s an upper level course all on its own
