Predictably Irrational Position Paper with Research

Your last take-home assignment gives you the opportunity to bring together in a single essay the various skills and rhetorical strategies we have practiced this semester. You will be writing a position paper on Predictably Irrational that will give you the opportunity to practice summarizing, analyzing, defining, considering causation, evaluating, and arguing. You will also need to pursue outside research to support your ideas. This is an important assignment, so begin early and ask questions as they come up.

Overview

In a New York Times book review of Predictably Irrational, author David Berreby notes that "Ariely is not out to overthrow rationality. Instead, he and his fellow social scientists want to replace the ‘rational economic man’ model with one that more accurately describes the real laws that drive human choices." This new model shows us to be not measured in our thinking but erratic, not smart decision makers but easily swayed by outside conditions and influences. We make irrational choices, according to Ariely, but we make them in predictable ways — and he suggests that revealing those patterns may help us improve our decision-making processes.

Topic

Choose a chapter from Predictably Irrational to investigate more deeply. You will be developing a position on Ariely’s claim in the chapter (and by extension, his thesis in the book). In the essay, you will need to define Ariely’s term "predictably irrational" as you understand it, summarize his research experiments and findings in the chapter, evaluate the degree to which his findings are convincing, and finally offer additional outside evidence to support your evaluation (i.e., evidence that helps support his claim or that reveals his claim to be potentially dubious, somewhat misleading, or even seriously flawed). You may find that while you accept Ariely’s experimental methods and findings, you object to his reflections at the end of the chapter (that’s where he says what he thinks the results mean in terms of human behavior and offers suggestions for improving ourselves and our society). Conversely, you may discover that the conclusions make sense to you while the methodology is troublesome. Or you may find both experimental methods and findings flawed. Any of these positions is valid and worth developing into an essay.

A final requirement for this essay is a research component. You must use at least eight outside sources, citing these sources properly in your essay using MLA style. The last page of your paper will consist of a ?Works Cited? page that lists each source accurately. The only parameters for your sources are that you include: 1) at least one quote or paraphrase from an expert in the field other than Ariely; 2) at least one relevant research study from outside the book; and 3) at least one quote from a current journal, newspaper, or magazine article. Be sure to look at the Teacher’s Guide included in the additional research tools; it includes links to a number of academic articles that could prove useful.

Training and Development Paper

Training Strategies for Small and Medium Sized Businesses: One Size Doesn’t Fit All
These papers are to reflect the current "state of the art" in the area and should reflect both academic and professional (practical) orientations. The paper should review the available research, discuss the implications of that research for the topic area, and provide conclusions. The paper must use at least six- to- eight scholarly sources and should be organized into the following areas:

Introduction: The area of research should be described and the purpose of the research. That is, describe the topic area in terms of (1) its relationship to training and (2) what you want to be able to contribute to the training literature by writing this paper.
Review of the literature: Organize the literature into logical streams of thought related to your topic area. Within each of these areas summarize what the literature has to say. Be sure to indicate in your discussion whether the information is based on empirical data or just the opinion of the author.
Implications of the literature: Again, organize the implications of the literature in a manner that logically builds the case for your conclusions (which you will present in the next section). For each of your implications be sure to reference the literature related to that implication. Be sure to indicate whether the implication is one that has already been made in the literature or if this is one that is original to you. You should identify in this section important areas related to your topic that are missing from the literature.
Conclusions: This is where you tie all the pieces together. Make sure your conclusions are organized in a logical order that states what you have concluded relative to the purpose of your paper. Be sure that these conclusions are justified. For example, conclusions based upon empirical fact have more weight than those based upon opinion. Opinions shared by many in the literature have more weight than those of only one author.

the music industry

Areas that I will expect you to cover in the essay – you can focus on a sector of your choice but the suggestions below are based on the music industry.

Patterns of cultural participation – here for example you can discuss –history of the ‘analogue’ music business. Refer to Digital Medieval for an engaging history of the last 20 years.

Un-Convention is also an example of a change in  cultural participation.

Changes in production – examples of impact of a creative technology and digitalization. Here you can also bring in the impact on income streams through piracy and IP. The In Business – music industry radio (4/01/14) programme has useful information for this section.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/i/b03mj272/
“It has been long established that the music industry has changed irrevocably over the past decade, with the internet disrupting the status quo as it has many other sectors. But the story has moved on from an industry dying from dwindling record sales.
The traditional way of releasing your record has changed thanks to new publishing companies, companies that gather music statistics and the streaming services such as Spotify and Deezer. Now these companies are disrupting the industry once again. Peter Day speaks with the key businesses involved such as Spotify and Musicmetric and the traditional, established players such as Sony Music.
Yet streaming services have also caused controversy because their payments to musicians are seemingly minuscule. Radiohead’s lead singer Thom Yorke has battled against Spotify, calling it the ‘last fart of a dying corpse’ ; how can musicians make money now? Peter hears from a band just starting out, Yossarian, to Moby who has sold millions of records and singer songwriter Billy Bragg. We compare how much musicians receive from different sources of revenue.
But others see the streaming services as saviours and the future of the music industry. Is the problem of small returns from songs streamed actually a clash between a new way of listening to music and the traditional way the industry has been run? Sony Music explain how they are writing their record deals with musicians and that they are thinking about changing this for the new digital age.”

Consumption – distribution and marketing (Henderson C (2005) The Long Tail )
Influenced some of the move in music to thinking about doing things collectively.
For example you could use Un Convention as a case study which promotes the notion of or organising  collectively  and looks at creating a large global network of music.

Un-Convention was created in Manchester in 2008 by a collective of DIY record labels. It promotes events and initiatives crowd sourced from its community. It facilitates and supports music as a tool for social change and is a not for profit initiative.

You can also discuss the changes in consumer choices and also corporate responsibility. The session where we discussed corporate ownership of data through digitalization is of relevance here.

You may also want to talk about ‘gate keeping role changes’ – we will be looking at this in detail in week 8.

Conclusion  – do include some of your own views about the future. .
