ZAPPOS

Zappos Shoes, led by young CEO Tony Hsieh, is well known for its non-traditional approaches to the workplace. From the background materials you should be familiar with traditional organizational structures such as the hierarchical organization, the flat organization, or the matrix organization. But CEO Hsieh plans an even more radical approach to organizing his online shoe retailing company called holacracy. This radical new approach involves eliminating hierarchies and even eliminating job titles. Many of you are used to working in a hierarchical organization, so as you can see this new form of organization (or perhaps “lack of organization”) will be a huge change over what most of us are used to. But for purposes of this assignment we must decide whether or not holacracy is likely to work for Zappos Shoes. This assignment reflects the radical new ideas of a younger CEO like Tony Hsieh as compared to more traditional structures found in the older and more established Fortune 500 companies. Here are some readings on Zappos and holacracy to get you started: Frean, A. (2014, Jan 06). How holacracy killed the hierarchy in companies going flat-out for success, The Times [ProQuest] Cook, D. (2014). Ready for holacracy? Zappos says it is. Benefits Selling.Breaking News [ProQuest] Shiers, L. (2010, 03). Touring Zappos. Footwear Plus, 52 [ProQuest} When you have finished researching Zappos’ current business model and holacracy, then write a four- to five-page paper answering the following questions: 1.What risks and challenges does Zappos face in implementing holacracy? 2.Overall what do you think the chances are of holacracy succeeding at Zappos? 3.What advantages or disadvantages do you think holacracy has over more traditional structures such as a hierarchical or matrix structure? Of the structures you have read about in the background materials, which one do you think would be the best match for Zappos? Explain your reasoning and make sure to cite Havinal (2009) and at least one other book chapter from the background materials as part of your answer. •Integrate readings on the concept of holacracy, Zappos Shoes’ organizational structure, and on traditional forms of organization structure. •Answer the assignment questions directly. •Stay focused on the precise assignment questions; don’t go off on tangents or devote a lot of space to summarizing general background materials. •Include both a bibliography and in-text citations. See the Student Guide to Writing a High-Quality Academic Paper, including pages 13 and 14 on in-text citations. Another resource is the “Writing Style Guide,” which is found under “My Resources” in the TLC Portal.

Strengthening Community

• All of the prompts are designed so that students can write about them without doing any research. No research is required for these essays, and no research is allowed. These essays should develop students’ own argument on the topic, using evidence drawn from personal experience or common knowledge. • Students are not responsible for putting the essay into any specific format. To state that more directly, do not spend any time putting the essay in APA or MLA format. Students will not be graded on format. Strengthening Community Many factors cause stress in our communities, and many changes challenge them to adapt. These range from violence in schools to new forms of communication, such as social media. Is it possible for an individual to take action that would strengthen his or her community?

Compare Qualitative and Quantitative Research Designs

This week, refer to the material in the readings to develop a comparison in the basic structures of qualitative and quantitative approaches. Using the facets described in the first few chapters of Litchman (2013), identify the specific parts of qualitative research studies and how each part is completed. Once this is completed, compare and contrast this material with quantitative constructs. Consider the overall outcome of both types, and then explain why each is used in order to begin describing why you might want to use qualitative research. This work goes toward the development of the purpose statement you will use in the concept paper in Week 8. Length: 5-7 pages Resources: 3-5 resources Please make sure the references are within the past 5 years. Resources: Litchman, M. Performance-Measurement System

Background: Collecting data and using that data to tell a story about an HR metric’s usefulness to an organization can be powerful in getting organizational buy-in. Data can help you define constructs and make linkages to other performance measures as well. Without using the most relevant data, you may convey the wrong story or only part of it. HR professionals sometimes fall into the trap of using the most convenient data rather than the most relevant because of their eagerness to begin projects or because of internal pressures to provide information quickly. In the end, they run the risk of breaking down their credibility in the long run. With this in mind, respond to the following: • Explain the importance of using the most relevant data when choosing a performance-measurement system, instead of the most convenient data. • Discuss the challenges that can occur if the wrong data are used, including the potential negative impact using these data might have on an organization. • Explain how HR professionals might use data to tell a story. • Explain how HR professionals might comfortably and confidently make decisions based on the most relevant data. • Be specific, and provide examples with references to the literature. Book: Becker, B., Huselid, M., & Ulrich, D. (2001). The HR scorecard: Linking people, strategy, and performance. Boston, MA: Harvard Business School Press Chapter: 5

Global Talent

Background: “It’s too expensive!” “Sorry, we cannot afford it at this time.” “We have always done it this way; why change? This works just as well.” Statements like these are often reasons new HR metrics are supported. For organizations to support the use of new HR metrics, there needs to be context so the value can be seen and the support can be given. For example, it is not enough to say that the turnover rate has remained fairly low since the implementation of a new HR initiative. Strategic partners need more context in order to see the value. Has turnover decreased since last year or since the 1990s, and by how much? Or, is the turnover rate currently lower than the chief competitor? The measurement is only valuable if it is relevant and aligns with the organization’s strategic goals. Being aware of the common challenges of implementing new HR metrics can help HR professionals prepare to overcome these challenges. Assignment: With these thoughts in mind: Write a cohesive and scholarly response based on your readings and research that addresses the following: (250 words min) How you might overcome at least one of the common challenges of implementing a new HR metric? For example: High investment Continued use of legacy metrics Accessibility of value-added metrics Provide 2-3 examples from the literature or your experience that have shown successful in overcoming one of these common challenges. Be specific, and provide examples with references to the literature. Book: Becker, B., Huselid, M., & Ulrich, D. (2001). The HR scorecard: Linking people, strategy, and performance. Refrain from explaining or speculating about behavior in this section; simply write the observations that are most important to give a clear picture of what you studied and how you studied it. Make use of physical measurements in this section. For the Speculation section, assert suggestions as to why certain behaviors emerged in your object of study. You might begin by deciding which behaviors most surprised you or seem most interested to you. You might also use the speculation section as a place to begin thinking about future questions that could be explored as a follow-up to your observations. assesment criteria will be attached. so will the logbook.
