human right issues

Project Description: When I figure out the human right issues I will inform you what they are.

Your team are acting representatives working through the United Nations High Commissioner’s Office of Human Rights.  Your goal is to select a human rights issue and thoroughly analyze it by applying course theories/concepts/terms. This project is comprised of two parts: Part I: Human Rights Issue Analysis (50 pts); Part II: Non-Violent Communication Analysis (100 pts.).

Part I: Human Rights Issue Analysis: (50 pts.)

In the first part of the project your team will thoroughly analyze the history, culture, macro/microcultural/muted groups and distribution of power of your selected human rights issue. Your team is essentially preparing a “brief” that could be used by a UN representative. Your team is responsible for providing all the necessary background information to the Human Rights Issue. Please be sure you include the following information in your analysis:

1) Research and locate a region where human rights violations are presently occurring (see Human Rights Project area in Moodle for resources).

2) Identify and apply a minimum of 3 human rights violations in your selected region. (See Universal Declaration of Human Rights)

3) Complete a thorough historical analysis examining the causes/effects behind the human rights violations.

4) Complete a thorough cultural analysis of your selected region (individualistic/collectivistic culture, high/low context communication, top 3 cultural values)

5) Examine the power (political, socio-economic, positional, etc.) structures and the role of power in the region.

6) Identify the people/groups involved by providing a description of the macro/microcultural groups and muted groups if applicable. You may want to examine these groups within the context of the power relationships in the region.

7) Provide a summary of your findings.

Paper Guidelines:

Each Human Rights Team has been given access to a shared folder in Google Drive. Please complete the following steps:

1) Open up the shared folder. You will be able to submit/save ALL your documents for this project in this folder.
2) Have one person create a document and call it HUMAN RIGHTS ISSUE ANALYSIS: TEAM X REGION X. Save this document in the folder. All members will work collectively on this ONE document.

3) Each person on the team will be required to write a minimum of 500 words and post a minimum of 3 comments to assist in editing the paper (each team member will be represented by a different color).

Persuasive Research Paper

We will be working on the Persuasive Research Paper for the next two units.  Please keep in mind that this is the longest paper you will write for this class.  (This paper is also worth more of your grade than others in this course.)  The Persuasive Research Paper will be due at the end of Unit 6.

In the Persuasive Research Paper, you will simply want to take a position on an issue of your choice, using research to support your position and to try to convince others to adopt your position.  This paper should be at least 4-6 pages long, it should include at least four sources, and it should accomplish the following:

*State your audience.

*Clearly articulate your position as well as the reasons why you hold this position, using evidence to support the validity of your stance.

*Present information confidently and efficiently.

*Use established information for support, as well as personal “evidence” (if applicable) such as short anecdotes and examples from your own experience, or the experience of others.

*Maintain a persuasive tone that will be accessible (not alienating or insulting) to your particular audience.

Unit 5 is designed to familiarize you with the Persuasive Research Paper, and to help you choose a topic.  I would like each of you to discuss your topic ideas on the discussion board this unit.  Unit 5 will also discuss basic structure and strategies to consider in terms of your approach to this paper.  Unit 6 will explain how to cite sources in papers such as this and give you time to revise.

In this unit, you will want to do two things:

1.) Make sure your sources are correctly cited, as explained in the lecture notes section of this unit.

2.) Revise your own work to the best possible quality.  I strongly recommend that in addition to reviewing your work yourself, you find yourself an outside reader—someone who will read your work and offer you suggestions for revisions.

You have two options in choosing an outside reader:

* You can find someone on your own to read your work (ie. your spouse, one of your kids, a friend, a neighbor).

* You can sign up for the Peer Review Option by emailing me.  (I’ll set up an email list, so that you and 2-3 of your classmates can email each other your drafts and get feedback.)

REMINDER: Papers on the following topics will not be accepted:

* abortion
* capital punishment
* euthanasia

I’ve already read more papers on these topics than anyone should in an entire lifetime, so I won’t read anymore. I encourage you to be more creative in selecting your topic.

uniqueness

Respond in a substantive manner.

How do you claim your uniqueness and build your confidence based on your uniqueness and authenticity?
The reflected best-self portrait is a compilation of multiple qualities and characteristics based on personal experiences, talent, values, competencies and personality attributes.  Moreover, Dutton, Spretzer, Heaphy & Quinn (2005) explain that “the RBS is a strength-based conception of the qualities and characteristics that this person believes he exudes when he is at his best” (p. 713-714).  The following represent a compilation of the themes I claim make me a unique based on live experiences.

Generosity & Compassion

Generosity and compassion are related.  I see myself as a generous person at the service of those that need me. For me, being able to help a person in need makes me feel complete; not having material possessions to offer, volunteering to help others in need is all I can give and that is something that makes me happy as a human being.

Morality

My moral values is something that I am very proud of as the decisions I make whether work related or personal, the decisions I made are based on my moral principles and beliefs.  I can say that my moral values are deeply rooted in my upbringing and religious beliefs.

Logic

My ability to see connections between different things and processes is something that I consider very unique about me and something that I perhaps share with many other people.  Being logical is of great utility in my profession where the use of logic to resolve complex investigations, often resourcing to having to improve established processes using logic.

Optimistic

Life is full of trials and complexities that can affect confidence and one’s ability to see good things behind negative or adverse experiences.  I believe that my ability to see the positives behind any adverse situations keeps me in good spirit.

Intelligence

Humans are intelligent beings.  I consider myself intelligent in the way that I am able to learn new things, find solutions to complex problems, and comprehend quickly.

Efficacy

I have a “yes, I can” attitude.  I am competitive with myself and motivated by a strong will to move forward and not getting stuck in my limitations or complaining about the challenges I have to face in life.

The aforementioned characteristics describe me as the person I am at a personal and professional level.  While there are other qualities and characteristics that can be added to this list, the aforementioned are some of the most important.

Ozymandias

Genre – Imaginative
Poem – Ozymandias

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: `Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear —
“My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!”
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.’

Percy Bysshe Shelley

The task outlines that you have to convert this poem into a short story. It should reflect the theme and mood of the poem. It could fill a gap in the poem, relate to the action leading up to the poem or extend the action at the end of the poem (the theme have to remain the same)
