Ethnicity/Race/Religion

Ethnicity/Race/Religion: Select two countries (France and a second one of your choice) that face challenges of politicized ethnic, racial or religious diversity. Compare and contrast: 1) the nature of the ethnic identity issue; 2) the major group(s) and the tactics they use to advance their goals; and 3) how government policies and/or political institutions have managed or exacerbated the issue. Be sure to clearly define the concept of ethnicity.

You need to compare France with another country.

Be sure to use at least 5 outside academic sources peer reviewed. Also use course materials from readings and books (Essentials of Comparative Politics (Fourth Edition) Patrick H, O’Neil)

abortion

As this is a relatively simply assignment, we will be working on the letter to the editor for one unit only.  The paper will be due at the end of Unit 4.

Purpose:

How many times have we heard someone complaining about something happening in our communities–but offering no solutions for the problem?  This assignment is designed to develop your problem-solving skills and engage you in a substantive conversation concerning a current local issue.  This assignment will also encourage you to begin seriously considering your audience as a writer.  When you are writing a letter such as this, you’ll want to consider who will be reading it, particularly in terms of what words, examples, facts, or appeals might best convince this particular group.

The Assignment:

* Write a two to three page (double-spaced) letter to the editor, proposing a solution to a current local problem.  List the newspaper to which you would be sending this to at the top of your paper.  Begin the letter with:  “Dear Editor,”  Throughout the paper, be as specific as you possibly can in terms of:

1.) Defining/describing the problem and who it affects

2.) Describing your solution

3.) Defending your solution as the best means of dealing with this problem

As you’re writing this letter, also do keep in mind your audience.

***

IMPORTANT NOTE: Papers on the following topics will not be accepted:

* abortion
* capital punishment
* euthanasia

I’ve already read more papers on these topics than anyone should in an entire lifetime, so I won’t read anymore. I encourage you to be more creative in selecting your topic.  For the Letter to the Editor, you should also be choosing a topic that is far more specific and local than any of these broad controversial issues.

The melody

Topic 2:  The melody, or “head,” begins at 00:00 and ends at 01:08.  What is the form?  Use letters and counter numbers to designate the sections.  Hint: this piece does not have a traditional form.  Listen for changes in melody and feel to mark the beginning and end of the sections.  Note: Some sections of this piece are not clearly marked because Jarrett improvises much of this piece.  However, he does present a melodic section followed by a solo section.  Describe how Jarrett phrases the melody.  Describe how he uses chords to support the melody.  Does is sound written?  Is it harmonized?  After the melody Jarrett begins his solo at 01:09.  Does he solo on the form of the melodic section?  How is the melody played at the end of the piece?  Is it played the same way at the end as it is in the beginning?  What style or styles would you characterize this piece: bop, hard bop, cool, modal or free?  Explain in detail using what you’ve learned from the Lessons about these particular styles.

The Hippopotamus

For this paper, you need to write an explication of the poem based on a close reading of a literary figure. In other words, you need to write an explanation of the poem’s meaning and how it relates to a single trope in the poem. To do this, you will need to pick a poem by one of the author’s we read in class (though not the poem we discussed), identify a literary figure in the text (for example: alliteration, allusion, metaphor, simile, symbol, rhyme scheme, meter, diction, parataxis, hypotaxis, enjambment, etc…), and write a paper that explains the poem based on this literary figure. Think about how your chosen literary figure enhances and helps achieve the poem’s purpose.  I will be looking for  coherent, structured arguments—by looking closely at one of these formal elements.

When using evidence to support your argument in each body paragraph, try to limit your quotations to the most significant and relevant part of the poem. Remember to discuss and defend your interpretation—don’t assume that these are self-explanatory.

I suggest you find poems by looking through an anthology in a library, or perusing reputable online websites like www.bartleby.com, www.poetryfoundation.org, www.poets.org. You should use proper MLA citation to cite the poem.

I need to use “The Hippopotamus” By T.S Eliot
