Historical understanding

Historical understanding involves more than simply storing factual information about who did what where when. It involves a critical approach to the past – what influences how people think about the past, how it’s portrayed, and for what purposes. Remember, “critical” does not necessarily mean “negative”; it means questioning the reasons for why things are rather than passively accepting that “that’s just the way things are” or “that’s the way things have always been.”

Write an essay that explains ways that this course emphasized a critical approach to historical understanding.

The focus of the writing assignments, questions from the worksheets, and the purpose of the service-learning project represent this critical approach, so it’s worth reviewing and reflecting on those as you develop your essay. The essay must address at least five of the various readings, videos, or other material from the course; in addition, these should span across at least three of the units from the course syllabus. These units are:
1.    Historical Methods & Issues
2.    Telling Lives
3.    The Red Leather Diary
4.    Slavery Yesterday & Today
5.    The History of Rights
The five topics that can be included is enola gay exhibit, Cleopatra,Christopher Columbus, The red leather diary and african slavery which should talk about  Olaudah Equiano
