Case Study

Raymond, a 78-year old man living in a motel, is found lying on the floor of his room, semi-conscious, by a housekeeper. The motel manager calls 9-1-1, and Raymond is taken to the closest emergency department. There, he lies on a gurney in the hallway for 6 hours before he is examined by a physician. Because it is unclear what is wrong with him, and he cannot speak coherently, the physician admits him to the hospital for observation. Later, when it is determined that Raymond had a stroke, he is discharged to an inpatient rehabilitation facility on the same medical campus as your hospital. The rehabilitation facility had no knowledge of his medical history, including his current medications for hypertension and high cholesterol. Raymond died there several weeks later.

(Case excerpted / adapted from text)

1.As a manager at the hospital profiled in the case study, identify one (1) area for improvement that can be gleaned from Raymond’s health care experience at your 200-bed community hospital and the affiliated rehabilitation facility..

2.Develop a Quality Measurement Journey Paradigm for an initiative to address this area for improvement. Be sure to include the following components of the paradigm and briefly explain each:
◦Aim.

◦Key concepts.

◦At least 1 measurable outcome.

◦Operational definitions.

◦Data collection plan.

◦Data analysis plan.

◦Actions you plan to take based on the outcomes..

.3.Make your paradigm feasible. For example, do not come up with something that requires such large amounts of financing that the hospital, already near fiscal insolvency, could not adopt it..

4.In 1-2 paragraphs, critically evaluate the plan. How did you address the cost-benefit-quality balance? Are there any possible consequences to your plan?  If so, what?.

thesis statements

THS  : This comment refers to “thesis statements” in general.  The thesis statement is typically the last sentence of the first paragraph.  It tells the reader what you will be arguing in your essay, what stance you will be taking on a certain issue.  Thesis statements are roadmaps for one’s entire essay—the body paragraphs are all seeking to prove and provide plausibility to this single claim.  If you see “THS” on your paper, you may want to check to see if your thesis is sufficiently argumentative—that is, would anyone stand up and disagree with you?  A common error with thesis statements is to make a claim which is more factual than argumentative, more descriptive than debatable.  The best thesis statements are qualified claims: i.e., sentences which contain a debate within them, a “they say” and an “I say,” or a devil’s advocate and a firm contrary stance which you will seek to prove in your essay.  Some examples of qualified thesis statements include…  Example 1: “Despite the age-old and often well-meaning criticisms aimed at ‘the idiot box,’ television can be used to improve our social as well as our cognitive lives.”  Example 2: “While it’s tempting when discussing the American obesity crisis to point the finger at the omnipresence of fast-food companies or even to the fact that we’re just ‘the wrong species at the wrong time,’ the truth of the matter is hard but necessary to swallow: we as individuals are each responsible for what becomes of our bodies.”
