Helping Clients Make Informed Decisions

Introduction
When it comes to sexual health, clients may face many difficult decisions for which their choices can have significant consequences for many years to come. This includes decisions about contraception and abortion. Many of these decisions address very sensitive concerns that clients may experience with a certain degree of embarrassment, misinformation, and uncertainty. Consider for instance, a couple that faces a decision regarding abortion in order to increase the viability of a multiple birth, or a couple whose religious beliefs prevent them from using contraception even though a pregnancy might be fatal to the mother.
Counselors may have the opportunity to help their clients make such decisions in an informed, honest, and thoughtful manner. Counselors also need to be very cognizant of how their own and their clients’ beliefs and values about these decisions are influenced by the contextual background, such as their spiritual beliefs, cultural backgrounds, and current relationship dynamics.
Because these sexual health issues are so very sensitive in nature, counselors must approach them with a solid knowledge base, sound clinical reasoning, and a high level of self-awareness. This week’s assignments will aid you in beginning to consider how best to work with clients in relation to these issues.
Objectives
By the end of this week, you should be able to:
• Explain strategies for helping clients make healthy, informed decisions regarding their sexual health
• Analyze factors that influence clients’ decisions regarding abortion
• Explain how personal beliefs regarding contraception and abortion influence counseling sessions
Please proceed to the Resources.
Helping Clients Make Informed Decisions
According to the ACA Code of Ethics, the "primary responsibility of counselors is to respect the dignity and to promote the welfare of clients" (Standard A.1.a). Counselors also should be "aware of their own values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors and avoid imposing values that are inconsistent with counseling goals" (Standard A.4.b). Keeping both points in mind, counselors must sometimes help clients make informed decisions about behavior that is harmful to themselves and, potentially, others. Whether or not to use contraception is one potential area related to sexuality counseling for which counselors may need to inform clients about potential risk.
Base your responses to this week’s Discussion on the following case study:
You are a counselor working in a college counseling center. You just completed your intake evaluation session with Josiah, a 20-year-old sophomore. Josiah was mandated to attend six counseling sessions after he received a citation from the campus police for underage drinking at a party sponsored by the fraternity to which Josiah belongs.
During the intake session, Josiah was very verbal and willing to share information about his background and current experiences. He shared with you that he frequently drinks six to eight beers or other alcoholic beverages at a time, typically every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday when he "parties with my friends." He described this as normal behavior among his peer group, saying that this is "just how we unwind from all the stress of school every week."
When you asked Josiah about his relationships and sexual behaviors, he stated that he has not had a steady partner since high school, saying, "People here just aren’t into long-term relationships." He admitted that he typically "hooks up" with at least one or two partners each weekend, and when you asked him what he meant by that, he said, "Sex." You asked if he uses any contraception in these sexual encounters, and he said, "No, I don’t like how they feel, so I won’t have sex if the other person would make me use one."
You asked Josiah what his goals are for counseling and what he would like to change, and he responded, "Not much really. I like my life and have fun with all the partying we do here. I guess I need to learn to be a little more careful with my drinking since I got that police citation, but otherwise I feel really happy with my life right now and can’t think of much that I really want to work on in counseling."
With these thoughts in mind:
Write an explanation of how you, as a counselor, might help this student make healthy, informed sexual decisions. Describe one specific strategy you might use or one example conversation you might have with him (in the form of a short dialogue) to help him change his sexual behavior. Explain why the strategy or conversation you described might be effective.
Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

History and movies

History and the Movies (50 points) (Due April 10) Your job is to take a film from the list, and first watch it. Then do research on the historical persona or event. You will write a 500 word essay and include at least two sources. In your essay you will present a brief analysis of the film?s plot as well as historical significance, value, and accuracy.
History and the Movies

Some of the movies that were nominated for Best Picture by the Academy Awards and won, were based on an historical fact or an event like Patton, A Beautiful Mind and A Man for All Seasons. Some of the films used fictitious and real characters to tell about an historical era like Gone with the Wind, All Quiet on the Western Front or Casablanca. From the first Best Picture1928 Wings to 2013 Argo, the Academy has nominated 150 films for Best Picture. In 1998 all five movies that were nominated were based on history. All told, 42 have taken home the top prize. That is almost half of the 86 winners.
It has been said, ?Hollywood never lets the facts get into telling a good story.? Although they do indeed tell a good story, the problem that remains for the historian, is that the general public accepts it as the truth. Sometimes the truth is edited out for various reasons, mostly with political correctness. So what is true and what is artistic license?
The Extra Credit Assignment Your job is to take a film from the list, and first watch it. Then do research on the historical persona or event. You will write a 500 word essay and include at least two sources. In your essay you will present a brief analysis of the film?s plot as well as historical significance, value, and accuracy.

As an example I have included Gladiator(2000), from Jackson Spielvogel?s, Western Civilization.
The film Gladiator, directed by Ridley Scott, is a fictional story set in the Roman Empire near the end of the second century C.E. In the movie, Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) informs his son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) that he intends to turn over imperial power to his successful and respected general, Maximus (Russell Crow), in hope that this decent and honest man can restore the Roman senate and revive the Republic. Commodus reacts by killing his father, assuming the position of emperor, and ordering the deaths of Maximus, his wife, and son. Maximus escapes but returns too late to save his wife and child. He is captured and sold into slavery to Proximo (Oliver Reed), who trains him to be a gladiator. Maximus is eventually sent to Rome, where he becomes a superhero in the gladiatorial games in the Roman Colosseum, all. the while awaiting an opportunity to avenge the death of his wife and son by killing Commodus. Maximus becomes involved in a plot with Lucilla Connie Nielson), the emperor?s sister, and Graccus (Derek Jacobi), a Roman senator, to join his army, march on Rome, and overthrow the emperor. When Commodus discovers the plot, he challenges the captured Maximus to a duel in the Colosseum but stabs him first to ensure his own success. Despite his injury, Maximus kills the emperor in combat.
Gladiator is relatively an exciting story, but how much of it is based on historical facts? With the exception of Marcus Aurelius, Commodus and Lucilla, all of the characters are historical fiction. Marcus Aurelius was a kind emperor (unless one was a Christian) with a love of philosophy and died in 180, probably from the plague, and certainly not from his son?s hands, as depicted in the film. Commodus ruled from 180 ? 192, although he was only eighteen when he became emperor, not in his late twenties as in the movie; and he had blond hair not dark hair. Commodus was an unstable and cruel young man who was strongly attracted to the gladiatorial contest the. He was obsessed with performing in the arena, especially with slaughtering animals. He was not killed in the Colosseum, however, but strangled by his wrestling partner on the last day of 192.
Contrary to the movie, Marcus Aurelius had no intentions of restoring Republic; by 180, most Romans had become accustomed to the empire. In fact, Marcus Aurelius had already made his son Commodus a joint ruler in 177. Nor had Marcus Aurelius banned gladiatorial games, as the movie claims. And although Commodus?s sister Lucilla did enter into a plot with some senators to assassinate her brother, the plot of 182 failed, and the conspirators, including Lucilla were executed.
Although Gladiator shows little concern for historical facts, the movie did demonstrate that many people are still interested in ancient history. It became one of the highest earning films of 2000 and won numerous awards including Academy Awards for Best Picture, and Best Actor for Russell Crow. Moreover, the film helped to renew interest in Roman history ? sales of biographies of historical Roman figures and of Marcus Aurelius?s Meditations increased noticeably in the years after the movie was released. Further Tips of writing news commentary:

1. Introduction

Summarize the news (keep it brief!). Provide any contextual information necessary to the understanding of the news.

Tip: Find key subjects and objects of the news; understand their relations within context;

2. Analysis

Your opinion/takeaway must unfold quickly. Focus on one issue or idea, briefly express your opinion in your opening sentence, and be clear and confirmed in your viewpoint. The following sentences should back your viewpoint with factual, researched, or first-hand information.

A good commentary is not just an opinion; it consists of fact put into well-informed context (always make references!).

Sample News Commentary: (276 words) published on Dec 27, 2013. New York Post

Subject: "Egypt military brands Muslim Brotherhood Terrorists"

Content:

In Egypt, an Arab Spring began on Cairo?s Tahrir Square and saw the election and then the deposing of a Muslim Brotherhood government has just come full circle. This week, Egypt?s Army-backed government formally designated the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization and stepped up its brutal crackdown. [NOTE:This is the summary of the news. You need to insert footnote here for reference to news source]

We shed no tears for the Brotherhood. Mohammed Morsi may have been democratically elected, but his Brotherhood-backed regime could hardly have been mistaken for a democracy. Political opponents were suppressed; the economy collapsed; and the ancient Coptic Christian community was subjected to an ongoing campaign of murder and repression. [NOTE: You need to make references to facts]

The question is where to go from here. At the moment, things seem to be back to the days of Hosni Mubarak, when enemies were suppressed ? along with democrats. He, too, had real enemies, and used them as an excuse to rule under a ?state of emergency? for most of his time in office. In the long run, that paved the way for the chaos we now see. [Note: You need to make references to facts to support your statement]

One thing we do know: Ordinary Egyptians will not be served by anarchy and civil war. Of all the bad choices, the only one with any chance for a better future is one where the army succeeds in restoring basic law and order and denying the Islamists control of the Arab world?s most populous nation.

Maybe then, Egyptians might have a government confident enough to avoid the mistakes of both its predecessors by opening to legitimate dissent. But surely not until then.
