I belive this is due to the time I spent in the Army as a Tanker(19K). The firing of the main gun is extreamly loud and when you are confined within the tank turret its self it can be even louder. With this when I am communicating with someone I try and view their words as even if I do not hear something specific many times I can read their mouths, or see their expression or mannerisisms when they speak and get the idea of what they are saying. I have very rarly had anyone say anything positive or negitve about my non-verbal communications. Very occasionally when I am in an argument with my significant other, I have been told that I will exude a feeling of anger or of indifference. While this is not normal it can be disconcerting. I do not like to make someone feel bad for talking to me. I belive that being I make eye contact with people when I communicate with them it helps in that they belive that I am intrested in what they are having to say. That it shows intrest and that I am willing to communicate with them. When someone looks away or looks down and can not keep eye contact it signifies to me that the person is hiding something, that they do not belive what they say, or that they have no intrest in the discussion. I think that people like to have direct answers, I belive that patients will want to be treated as though they are haveing a conversation vs. being talked at or talked to. There for I belive that my non-verbal communication will help me in the future. By Morel, Bryan Discussion 2 (One paragraph) I don’t think that I have a unique pattern of nonverbal communication, but I do have some definite ones that I usually use. I know that I make eye contact frequently. If someone is telling a story I tend to nod my head and encourage them along. What’s interesting to me is that when I was younger I noticed that my mom would nod her head in agreement with a speaker or teacher, and I noticed that whoever was speaking woud tend to focus their eye contact and attention on her. It made me think that the speaker probably felt more comfortable in the situation, as if they were speaking to someone one on one instead of a crowd. I picked up the habit because of that. I also try not to do other things if someone is telling me a particularly emotional, serious, or detailed story, because I’ve noticed that when I’m talking or telling a story and someone is obviously not paying attention (on their phone, picking lint off of their sweater, etc) I feel very unwelcome. The only non-verbal communication skil that people have commented on is that I make eye contact when speaking. Some have said that it makes them nervous, and some have said that it sort of taken aback because not everyone does that when listening. I think that all of the nonverbal methods that I’m aware of make me an effective communicator, and will help me in my daily life with clients. I’ve worked in a busy healthcare setting for a few years, and it has taken me a lot of practice to be able to have a one on one conversation with a patient regarding medication or treatment when there is a busy unit around us. I think it’s much better to be sitting with them, making eye contact, and nodding in agreement when they tell me something instead of me just talking and assuming they are listening and understanding. By Sironen, Laura Discussion 3 (One paragraph) As the name implies, energy drinks are supposed to give you an extra burst of energy. Its two main ingredients are sugar and caffeine and a typical energy drink contains about 80 mg of caffeine about the same as a cup of coffee comparatively to an average 12-ounce soda. A 2006 study found that the average 12-ounce soda contains 18 to 48 mg of caffeine. (Watson, 2006). High amounts of caffeine found in many energy drinks have been linked to elevated blood pressure, seizures and other related health conditions which those with existing heart condition are more at risk. Some related risks are impaired cognition, risk of drug abuse, and an increased risk of alcohol injury and dependence. (“5 Health Problems Linked to Energy Drinks,” 2012). Notably a 2010 study on energy drink consumers concluded that no clinically significant ECG changes occurred, and increases in heart rate and blood pressure were significant therefore patients with hypertension should not consume this type of drink. (Higgins, Tuttle, & Higgins, 2010). Caffeine in itself has a diuretic effect and contributes to dehydration which could influence the overall electrolyte and acid-base balance of the body. Sports drinks were initially developed to provide electrolyte and carbohydrate replacement. (Higgins et al., 2010). In the US, regulation of energy drinks, including content labeling and health warnings has some of the laxest requirements. Moreover, ingredients like caffeine and other stimulants such as ginseng, taurine and guarana, B-vitamins, milk thistle extract, inositol makes it soft drink and part nutritional supplement give manufactures a route to avoid labeling their products. A label notifying consumers of the risk of any beverage or drink is an important safety measure and I think energy drinks shouldn’t be an exception. I think energy drinks should it be illegal to sell them to anyone under the age of 16 because has been proven to be associated with high-risk behavior, including marijuana use, sexual risk taking, fighting, failure to use seat belts, and taking risks on a dare, as well as with smoking, drinking, problems stemming from alcohol abuse, and illicit drug use. (Higgins et al., 2010). Caffeine works by blocking the effects of adenosine in the brain which causes neurons in the brain to initiate the “fight or flight” response which makes the heart beat faster and the eyes dilate. It also causes the liver to release extra sugar into the bloodstream for energy. Caffeine affects the levels of dopamine, a chemical in the brain’s pleasure center. All of these physical responses make you feel as though you have more energy. Energy drinks are generally safe, but like most things, you should drink them in moderation because caffeine is a stimulant. By Warri, Patience Discussion 4 (One paragraph) Energy drinks has its pros and cons. Number one reason why so many people drink them is because it boosts energy level. According to Health Research Funding (HSR, 2014), most energy drinks contain a dozen ingredients like: caffeine, taurine, vitamin B, guarana, ginseng, L-carnitine, sugar, and ginkgo biloba. Caffeine is the most widely consume stimulant for the central nervous system. The downfall to these drinks is that it may lead to weight gain due to the huge amount of sugar intake. But most importantly it can cause irregular and rapid heartbeat, and increase blood pressure resulting in cardiovascular problems (HSR, 2014). HSR claims too much consumption can, “affect one’s ability to function properly” experiencing anxiety and irritability. Energy drinks don’t’ necessarily influence electrolyte but mainly central nervous system to keep a person going. Sports drink on the other hand are “designed to replenish than energize” (Webb, 2013). These drinks contain carbohydrates, minerals, other vitamins and electrolytes. In this case sports drinks can do better for a body when working out than energy drinks. Energy drinks should have warning label on them but they don’t. This depends on how the manufacture labels and promotes the drink, it’s regulated through FDA (Webb, 2013). It is always difficult to put a label on food items and to control the buyer. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2015), states about 31% of 12 to 17 years old consume energy drinks. It means that the product is convient people are going to buy it. But should understand that the product is to be consume in moderation and if it makes you feel awful don’t drink anymore.
