Information Strategy for a Global Economy

You are required to research and write up a compilation of short practical case scenarios drawn from sources such as journal articles, newspapers, and/or the internet which illustrate a range of information, systems, and supporting technologies relating to companies of your choice. The cases should be around 400-600 words each and the total collection will not exceed 2500 words. Each case should introduce a company using information drawn from a number of sources and provide a short analysis of how they relate to areas of module content. You will need to:

1. Identify organisations or industrial sectors of your choice that use information systems and/or digital technology;

2. Provide summaries in your own words which profile these real-world organisations followed by a brief discussion in each case of how your chosen organisation (or sector) relates to module themes in using information systems and/or digital technology to compete globally;

3. Aim to illustrate your breadth of understanding of module content and how this might be illustrated by the real world examples you have chosen.

Marks are allocated for the quality of case summary and the provision of relevant discussion around how key information systems and/or technologies enable your chosen organisation or sector to compete globally and/or use information systems and/or technologies strategically. Higher marks will be awarded for referencing module topics and theories in the evaluation of information strategies chosen by your organisation / sector and the issues facing the global economy that go beyond mere description.

The task will be introduced with an example exercise in the first seminar and all subsequent seminars will provide opportunities for discussions in class on the progress of this assessment task.

MKTG 430 Fall 2015 Shadowing Assignment Instructions
This assignment is to spend “a day” with a salesperson as he or she does his or her regular job.
Students must find the salesperson and obtain her/his permission to shadow her/him for the day.
Given the variety of activities involved in a career in sales, it will be impossible for all students to have a
uniform experience.
The goal is to spend time with a salesperson and observe them while interacting with customers.
Do not spend the day with someone that is only entertaining customers, such as taking them golfing.
SHADOWING ASSIGNMENT REFLECTION PAPER
After the shadowing day, write a paper about the experience. Report the activities you witnessed and
how they relate to this class. What did you see that is like the material in the courses? What was different?
What do you understand now as a result of this experience that you did not know before? The paper should be
between 6 and 10 pages long, excluding the cover page, double spaced, 1” margins, 12 point, Times New
Roman font. The report is due on December 2, 2015, uploaded to Canvas as a Word document.
The shadowing assignment is to allow you to gain perspective about what salespeople actually do in
their daily jobs. Ideally you will be able to observe a salesperson calling on a customer in person. The paper is
to report your experience and relate it to what you have learned in class. Your paper should contain the
following information.

indicated below. Did the sales person appear to follow the selling process as laid out in the text? Explain or
describe how the process was followed or not followed. For example, describe how/if the salesperson:
Prepared for the customer visit?
Got the customers attention?
Asked open-ended questions to determine the customer’s wants and dominant buying urge?
Presented or offered a solution to the customer?
Handled objections by presenting value-based solutions, then encouraged customers to purchase?
Completed the sale in a way that should lead to a continuation of business?
Assess your experience:
Your assessment should be specific to the context of your experience. You should provide your opinion
of the salesperson (good, medium, bad), your perception of their relationship with their customers, and how you
would handle the selling process and customers if you were in the salesperson’s position. You should discuss

Book Review on Masters of the Word How media shaped history from the alphabet to the internet by William J. Bernstein

A good book review is likely to contain the following elements:

1. Thesis: the authors chief point or points of view regarding the field or subject being discusses; what does the author wish to show or prove about his/her subject? The thesis is the unifying element of the book or article and thus must be detected in order to understand the book or article. It is sometimes stated very explicitly by the author, and sometimes it is implied only indirectly.

2. A brief summary and analysis of the books contents. What subject has been treated in the book? Has the author treated the subject chronologically, topically, or by some other method? How does the author attempt to prove the thesis he/she has established? As part of this summary and analysis, you should discuss the most important facts the author uses to support the book’s thesis.

3. Critique: This is the most important part of the review. It is your evaluation of the book or article you have read. Criticism does not always have to be negative or hostile; positive aspects of a book or article deserve as much comment as suggestions for improvement. As part of your critique, you should consider several points:
A. Does the author have an obvious bias or point of view that might give the work greater or less credibility? Note: an obvious bias or point of view does not necessarily undermine a books credibility.

B. Does the author prove his/her thesis to your satisfaction? Is he/she convincing? Does he/she make sense, or is his/her argument based on faulty reasoning?

C. Is the book well written? This requires that you evaluate the literary character of the book.

D. Does the author provide any aids to assist the reader? Such aids could include maps, genealogical charts, statistical data, graphs, pictures, table of contents, index, bibliography, etc. Were those aids helpful? If such aids are not provided, would they have been helpful if they had been provided?

You should provide a complete citation of the book at the top of the first page of the review.
