Analysis “Screen Eat a Bowl of Tea” (1989, dir. Wayne Wang)

SELECT ONLY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING

1. Select a film from the course and discuss the key cinematic techniques employed in three scenes of your choice. How do these visual and auditory means of representation help tell the story? Are these techniques conventional, witnessed all over the silver screen, or does the director use them in his own unique way(s)? (In other words, analyze three scenes from a film and put the cinematography in context.)
2.Discuss the style of a director examined in the course. What are the characteristics of his style, and how does his style influence the presentation of the story as well as the images and sound of the movie? Is his style particularly suited to the subject matter of the film we screened in the course and to his overall artistic concerns, and if so, how? You may draw from other works by the same director.
3.In representing China to the West, sometimes Chinese directors employ the spectacle, with vivid colors and exotic scenes. Sometimes directors focus on aspects of society or stories that would be unusual even for the period. 4.Sometimes these movies portray emasculated gender roles. Where do we draw the line on self-exoticization or self-orientalization? Would the Chen Kaige and Zhang Ymou films screened in the course fall under the category of self-orientalizing movies? Why or why not?
5.Even though knight-errant films seem to be a men’s world, femininity seems to play a crucial role. How does femininity help construct the plot and ethos of knight-errant films?
6.What are the problems and rewards of representing historical events through personal memory?
7.Explore the relationship between time and space in two or three films seen in the course.
8.Create your own topic. You must write a one-paragraph proposal and submit it by Tuesday, December 1, for instructor approval.
9.You may also write on Hou Hsiao-hsien’s Assassin even though we haven’t screened it in the course.

Tips
Do NOT summarize the plot. All too often students substitute plot summary for analysis. On the other hand, do contextualize when necessary. The rule of thumb: on each page, there should be less than 25% description of the plot.

Requirements
Form: 1’ margin all around, using a standard 12-pt font in black ink. Number the pages.
Length: 8-10 pp. As per our discussion, two of the pages of may be stills from the film that the paper discusses. That means a minimum of 6-8 pp. of text, plus 2 pp. of illustrations.
Double-space only. Single-spacing or 1.5-spacing is not acceptable. Going over the maximum length is not as bad as crowding the page.
Put your name on the paper & clearly indicate which assignment above you have chosen.
Underline the thesis statement. Make sure to formulate a strong thesis statement rather than a weak thesis statement. For tips on finding a thesis statement and on what a strong thesis statement is, read .
Title the paper.
Avoid mechanical errors such as improper punctuation, capitalization, italicization, etc.

Organizational Leadership Study

Select and read one qualitative observationally-based behavioral and/or interactionist research article from a peer-reviewed scholarly journal that is relevant to your topic and has the same basic format you would like to use for your study design.
Use this article as a basis for designing your own observational research project that applies a theory pertaining to public safety leadership.

Title Page
Start your research design project with a simple title that very briefly characterizes your proposed project. (Your title should not be more than 10 words. Do not put quotation marks around or underline the title.) An abstract is not needed.

Introduction

In APA, the introduction does not require a subheading because it is known to come first.
Begin the assignment with an introduction of the general topic that you will be studying.
State the theoretical and practical significance of your topic. Why is it important or useful to study this topic?
Indicate what you want to find out about the topic by offering your research question.
As you make your selection, include a leadership theory that will help you to define and test hypotheses about organizational public safety leadership.
Specify the potential contribution this project could make to the literature by briefly indicating the gap in knowledge that it will fill.
This section should be approximately 300 words.

Literature Review
Briefly summarize the article you located earlier, focusing carefully on how the article uses an observational research methodology in relation to the project.
Show how the article with its theory and findings helped you to develop your research design.
This section should be approximately 500 words.
Method of Research
Design your own study.
State the central research question in one sentence. What do you want to discover?
Provide a guiding thesis statement.
Describe the method of research you would use to carry out your approach. Be as precise and detailed as possible within the scope of this assignment.
Present the types of phenomena that you would observe.
Describe the sample you would observe and how you would conduct your observations and collect the data.
Present the measures you would use to analyze your qualitative and quantitative behavioral and interactionist observational data.
Show how you would protect the security and confidentiality of your sample of observed personnel by taking into account the elements of research ethics. Refer to the Ethical Principles page on iGuide (linked in the Resources).
This section should be approximately 500 words.

Anticipated Findings
Suggest what you imagine you would find if you actually implemented the design.
How would you analyze the observational data using qualitative tools?
How would you present the observational data?
This section should be approximately 400 words.

Discussion
Describe how you would use theory to explain the findings you would expect to obtain.
Describe what your research would demonstrate about the distinctive nature and challenges of public safety leadership as manifested in the leader-subordinate interactions you have observed.
Evaluate how interactions in the organization reflect key leadership challenges.
Identify at least one limitation of your own proposed project.
Present ideas for improving the leadership function that could be taken from your proposed research project.
Suggest a follow-up study to promote further beneficial research activity.
This section should be approximately 500 words.

Literature Review

Submit Assignment: Literature Review
The purpose of the literature review is to give you an opportunity to become familiar with the major topics of this course by writing a critical analysis of 7-10 scholarly articles that would be of interest to people in sport management, sports administration, and leadership positions. Regardless of the role within your organization, keeping abreast of the current literature in the field of organizational leadership, sport development and behavior, and other related areas is essential. This miniature literature review is also good practice for the much broader literature review you will be expected to produce for your capstone/thesis.
For scholars, the depth and breadth of the literature review emphasizes the credibility of the writer in his or her field. For the purposes of this assignment, the literature will contain an organizational pattern and combine both summary and synthesis. A summary is a recap of the important information of the source, but a synthesis is a re-organization, or a reshuffling, of that information. It might give a new interpretation of old material or combine new with old interpretations. A literature review is usually organized around ideas, not the sources themselves as an annotated bibliography would be organized. This means that you will not just simply list your sources and go into detail about each one of them, one at a time. You may use the major topics of this course to search professional journals, the Internet and books.
As you continue to read widely but selectively in your topic area, consider instead what themes or issues connect your sources together. Do not try to cover all the topics. Pick one and concentrate on that particular one so you can go a bit deeper into the literature.
Pick one of these themes to focus the organization of your review. Use long quotes sparingly, organize your thoughts and themes. Be selective; the majority of your sources should be within the last 5 years, unless they are considered benchmark or seminal.
Length: 10-12 pages (maximum) plus References page.
Support your statements with evidence from the required studies and your research. Cite and reference your sources in APA style.
