Content and indicative assessment criteria (see mark grid of full details):
1. Selection of one or two appropriate and authentic experiences. Rationale for the selection: what was the context? What were the managing and developing people issues involved? How were you involved?

2. Application of appropriate concepts, theories and/or models to examine the chosen experience(s) to create a multi-dimensional analysis of the selected experience(s),
a. Identification of the limits of the concepts and theories and modules you have applied in your analysis. .
b. Use examples and evidence to support your points.
c. Focus must be on application of concepts, theories and models to the chosen experience(s); do not just provide a summary of them. Use your own words. No lengthy quotations from the work of other writers; no cutting and pasting from other sources; the only quotations should be what someone said or wrote in direct relation to the experience(s) being examined.

3. Excellent links made to current or future behaviours and identification of role models, use examples and evidence to support your points.

4. Through the analysis of your experience(s) formulate a clear conclusion that identifies the critical factors for managing and developing people.

5. References cited must relate to the concepts, theories and models you applied and should be included in text. At the back of the report you should provide a complete list of references used – but only those you cited and applied in your report.

gap year

Each year, a growing number of high school graduates are choosing to take a year off before going to college. The idea of this kind of “gap year” has been the source of some debate. Research the pros and cons of the gap year. Then, write an essay in which you argue for or against taking a year off before college. Please note that this is not an assignment asking you to “report” on the topic. While you will conduct research in order to educate yourself about the pros and cons of a gap year, your paper should do much more than list them. The idea is to sift through what you learn in order to arrive at a thesis—your position on this issue—and then build a supporting argument using the sources you’ve selected. The more specifically you can focus your project and the sources you choose to incorporate, the better your paper will turn out. It will be especially important to adhere to the guidelines for persuasion and argument laid out by our textbook editors and discussed by us throughout the course. Your grade for this paper will be based on the depth and grace of your argument, as well as on more conventional criteria such as proper use of quotes, how well you work in outside source material, and how well you proof and edit the paper. Use at least five reliable sources (only one of which should be a website), and follow all the guidelines for MLA style. (We’ll discuss both of these further in class.)

Psychology of Humor

2. In Unit 4, we discussed the positive and negative ethics of humor, and its virtues. Give an example of a stereotype in humor and identify negative ethics mentioned in Morreall’s text. In what category of humor would Claessens & Dhoest put this example?

The negative effects of humor we learned about in Week 4 covered that humor is idle, irresponsible, and it raises your social status. The stereotype to that identified in Morreall’s text gives a joke in poor taste about a doctor trying to put a patient on a diet and the patient ignoring the doctor’s orders because the doctor is over weight themselves. (Morreall, 2009, pg. 102) Claessen & Dhost would put this in the category on the left which shows that if you are not well educated tends to have a negative effect on your humor perspective. So Morreall zeros in on what we do and what we are not doing or failing to do so instead of us not taking the situation seriously we should look at it from a different angle or another perspective. In regards to the joke about the doctor, the doctor could have health issues that prevent them from exercising or medications that prevent them from losing weight but the patient doesn’t explore this option or even think about it. So, it is necessary sometimes to not judge a book by its cover.

Stereotypes are woven into numerous parts of our cultural history. Give an example of a stereotype you have observed in a comedy film, cartoon or television show. What theory or theories of humor are seen in the example? How does your example relate to ethics and status or power?

One stereotype that is abundant and often accepted in media is the Asian stereotype. Asian people are usually stereotyped as smart, nerdy, clever and as having strict parents. One movie that exhibits this standard Asian persona is The Goonies. The only Asian character in the movie, Data, is geeky and inventive. He always has some kind of special gadget or booby trap. His nickname “Data” also primes viewers to think of math and science when they hear the name. Asian characters are also often portrayed as having a heavy accent. Data’s character also fits this stereotype, as his friends often have a difficult time understanding what he says. There are many theories of humor present in The Goonies movie. The one that is most associated with Data though, I believe, is the relief theory. This theory holds that laughter occurs when tension is reduced and nervous energy is released. Data causes this relief throughout the movie when he sets traps and pulls out surprise gadgets to get his buddies out of sticky situations. This example relates to ethics because it does stereotype Asian people. Although the Asian stereotype seems to be widely accepted, I am not sure that it should be and some people may become offended by this typecast.

1. Explain the distinction Hume makes between ideas and impressions. Which one is dependent upon which? Why? And explain how this is so important for Hume’s version of empiricism.

2. Why does Hume think that the flow or stream of our ideas is not entirely random, but is governed by principles or laws of connection or association? Formulate his principles of the association or connection of ideas, namely: Resemblance, Contiguity in time or place, and Cause or Effect. Give illustrations of each principle.

3. Hume claims that all objects of human reason or inquiry (all propositions) fall into one of two classes: relations of ideas and matters of fact (this division is called Hume’s Fork). What examples does he give of relations of ideas? In what sciences or disciplines does one usually find them? Only in mathematics? Are they discovered or known a priori or a posteriori? Explain the difference between a priori and a posteriori.

4. Hume claims that we never come to know cause-effect relationships a priori but always a posteriori, i.e., from experience. What is the thought experiment about Adam supposed to show? Do people tend to think they have a priori insight into causal relationships in the case of novel objects or in the case of things dramatically different from those of everyday experience? What about cases where the causal mechanism is supposed to be highly complicated or to depend on hidden structure? What about cases where the events are familiar, simple, and without apparent hidden structure, e.g., collisions and motions of ordinary billiard balls?

5. Explain Hume’s argument that we never have a good reason to believe that a miracle has occurred. What does he mean by ‘miracle’ here?

6. Explain Hume’s refutation of the argument from Design – why does it fail, in his view?
