substance abuse problem

People that abuse substances have individual reasons for what first drove them to begin using these substances in the first place. Some clients started using them through experimentation, peer pressure, or curiosity. However, many users began using substances as a way of dealing with other issues in their lives, such as depression, anxiety, weight loss, or other physical or mental disorders. In still other cases, mental and physical disorders may result in response to chronic substance abuse. In these cases, it is important to determine what the co-occurring disorder is, as well as the substance abuse problem, in order to determine the best course of treatment.

Read the following scenario and then respond to the questions that follow:

You are a substance abuse counselor. Gregory, your new client, has come to you for help with his alcohol use problem. Gregory is married with three children and works as a sales representative for a large corporation in the city. In your first meeting with Gregory, you discover that his drinking began as a way to alleviate the anxiety he felt in social situations. Over time, Gregory began using alcohol more often. He found that every time he used alcohol, his anxiety lifted and he was able to be more at ease during work, out with colleagues, and at other such public events. Over time, Gregory realized he needed more alcohol than before to get the same anxiety relieving effects.

Two weeks ago, one of Gregory’s coworkers became suspicious that Gregory was drinking at work. That same day, while Gregory was driving home from work, he was pulled over by the police. He passed the field sobriety test and the officer let him off with a warning. These two events served as a wake-up call for Gregory as he realized his alcohol use may be beyond his control.

Gregory has made an appointment with you because he sincerely wants to curtail his alcohol use.

To help Gregory achieve his goals, write a paper that analyzes the components of his scenario. In your paper, ensure that you include the following information:

Summarize the history and usefulness of the four major contemporary treatment modalities (crisis intervention, individual counseling, group counseling, and family counseling).
Evaluate Gregory’s dual diagnosis (also referred to as “co-occurring disorders”) and the implications for counseling. Keep the following questions in mind:
Describe the meaning of dual diagnosis and how it impacts counseling.
Classify Gregory’s primary and secondary diagnoses.
Analyze the implications in treating a secondary diagnosis.
Evaluate the limitations for an alcohol and drug counselor when treating diagnoses other than those related to substance abuse. Describe the circumstances where the four treatment modalities might be useful in a dual diagnosis.
Recommend at least one treatment modality for Gregory and explain your recommendation using at least two scholarly references.

Write a 4–5-page paper in Word format. Use scholarly resources, including your textbook, to support your ideas. Your paper must be in Word format and include a title page and reference page in addition to the 4-5-pages of content. Apply APA 6th edition standards to the format of the paper, and the citation of sources.

history of psychology

Students will write a paper on a prominent figure in the history of psychology. Figures will be limited to those on a list provided by your Instructor. The paper assignment is divided into three parts: selection of the historical figure; the preliminary reference list; and the final draft of the paper.

General Description of the Assignment

The major objectives of the assignment are to tell a coherent story about the historical figure’s life and career, and to draw specific conclusions about several issues.

Genetic Influence

One of the first sections of the paper requires you to draw conclusions about if (and in what ways) the person’s genetics seemed to have influenced his or her success in the discipline of psychology. (Your knowledge about your subject’s genetics will be limited to accounts about his or her relatives [e.g., educational level, occupation], and socio-economic status.) If, after you’ve done a thorough search of the literature, you can find no evidence for a genetic influence (and no compelling evidence to the contrary), simply explain that.

Social Influence

The second conclusion students will make is if, and how much and in what ways, their subject’s social environment (in their childhood and later) appear to have contributed to the professional achievements (i.e., educational achievement, successful areas of research, and family life) of the historical figure they have chosen. The assumption here is that the figure’s interest in a particular area of research (e.g., Does Conrad Lorenz’ work on imprinting appear to be tied to his childhood experiences?).

Historical Significance

Lastly, the student will argue whether or not the historical figure they wrote about deserves to be considered a major figure in the history of psychology. That is, in general, should the figure be considered noteworthy, not really noteworthy (they deserve little or no attention in the history of psychology), or somewhere in between?

These things said, it is possible that the student’s library research will not support some (or all) of the possible connections between the factors described above and their subject’s success and major lines of research. In that case, the student will present their rationale for drawing each of their conclusions.

Use of Quotes

Avoid the overuse of quotations, especially block quotes. Almost all of the information used from your references should be paraphrased (put into your own words [and of course include a citation of the source of the information]).

Only include quotations when the statement is of great importance and said extremely well (i.e., if you were writing about Abraham Lincoln including at least several quotes would likely be essential). almost all of the information used from your references should be paraphrased (and of course include a citation of the source of the information). Papers may be submitted to Turnitin.com (via Blackboard) up to five times to help students improve their ability to paraphrase.

Requirements

The paper will be written in American Psychological Association (APA) style (see links below for helpful information on APA style). As noted above, the overall paper assignment will consist of three parts. The first part is the submission (and approval) of a subject/historical figure. The second part is submission of a Preliminary Reference List. The list must include at least 12 sources. Acceptable sources are published books, book chapters, refereed journal articles, and/ or legitimate websites (see Appendix B for details). The second part of the assignment is the paper itself. The paper will be double-spaced and in 12 point type. Papers should consist of 7 to 10 pages of text (running over a few pages is acceptable, as long as the paper is not “padded” with information that is not particularly important. See Appendix C for more details.

Sources of Information

Different sections of the paper will require information from different types of sources (see Appendix B). For instance, some sections will require historical information about the life of the person (most likely written by others). Other sections require the student to gather information from the person’s published research (e.g., journal articles, books, book chapters). Most of the sources used for the paper should be refereed journals, books and book chapters; however, biographies and autobiographies are also acceptable sources.

Information used for the paper must be from reliable sources. As you know there is much questionable information on the internet (e.g., you or I could set-up a website and publish very authoritative information about nuclear physics [regardless of how much we actually know about the subject]). The point is, be very careful when choosing sources of information on the internet. Our Librarians (and your instructor) can be very helpful in assisting students in separating out reliable from questionable on-line sources of information.

3-Leadership Attributes of the Advanced Practice Role:
o Determine your leadership style (https://psychology.about.com/library/quiz/bl-leadershipquiz.htm).
Leadership Quiz: your results
Your results indicate that your leadership style is both: Authoritarian and Delegative
Authoritarian Leadership
Authoritarian leaders provide clear expectations to group members on what should be done, when it should be completed, and how it should be accomplished. These leaders make decisions without input from group members. Authoritarian leadership is best used in situations when there is little time for group decision-making or when the leader is the one best equipped to solve the problem or give directions.
Overuse of an authoritarian style can be construed as bossy and controlling. Worst-case examples of this style can be seen when leaders utilize bullying techniques such as yelling, abusing power, or demeaning group members.
Delegative Leadership
Delegative leaders allow group members to make decisions. This style is best used in situations where the leader needs to rely on qualified employees. The leader cannot be an expert in all situations, which is why it is important to delegate certain tasks out to knowledgeable and trustworthy employees.
Remember, good leaders utilize all three styles depending upon the situation. For example:
• Use an authoritarian style if a group member lacks knowledge about a certain procedure.

• Use a participative style with group members who understand the objectives and their role in the task.

• Use a delegative style if the group member knows more than you do about the task.
Great leaders need to adapt and change based upon the objectives, needs of group members, and situational factors.
o Identify leadership attributes you currently possess, and attributes you may need to develop.
o Determine how to attain and evaluate those missing attributes.
4-Health Policy and the Advanced Practice Role
• Visit the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (https://www.rwjf.org/en/about-rwjf/newsroom/features-and-articles/health-policy.html) and identify a health policy issue. Conduct a review of literature and address the following:
o Describe the current policy and what needs to change; justify your conclusions with citations from the literature.
o Provide the process required to make the change with key players and parties of interest.
o Explain how you could lead the effort to make or influence the change in policy.
Predict the effect on healthcare quality if the change in policy is implemented.
