Could morality exist if God didn’t exist

HMS 102 Ethics (AP A Research Paper Due May 6, 2016 The paper is due on the Discussion Board on Friday, May 6. Late papers will not be accepted, so it’s best to start your paper as soon as possible. Choose one of the topics below. Your task is to write a clear argumentative and critical essay in which you discuss a controversial area in ethical theory, and argue for your own position on the issue. In particular, you should aim to do one or more of the following: • State and defend a new argument in favor of a clearly formulated ethical theory or principle • State and defend a new argument against one of the ethical theories discussed in the course • State and defend a new response to a commonly given objection to a certain ethical theory • State and defend a new rejoinder to a response typically given to a commonly given objection to a certain ethical theory Your paper should be approximately 4-5 “narrative” pages in length (double-spaced, 12 pt. black font/APA format with 1-1/2″ margins on all sides.) Also include a separate title, abstract, and reference page = a grand total of7-8 pages that must be submitted. You must give the appropriate citation for all outside sources that you consult. (Visit your writing/tutoring center, as needed, for assistance or reference online.) Bear in mind that passing off the work of others as your own in any way, shape or form, constitutes serious academic misconduct and will result in severe penalties, including but not limited to receiving a failing grade in the course. Topics to Choose From: 1. Would or could morality still exist if God did not exist? What arguments can be given on either side of the debate? Are the arguments good ones? Discuss the Euthyphro problem and its relevance to answering this question. (If appropriate, discuss the attitudes of Mavrodes and Nielsen.) 2. Are there any basic moral principles that apply to all people, all cultures at all times? What arguments can be given for or against different versions of ethical relativisim? Are the arguments good ones? (If appropriate, discuss the attitudes and arguments given by Pojman.) 3. Does doing the morally right thing ever make a person’s life worse offthan doing the wrong thing? Discuss how this relates to the ethical position of egoism. What arguments can be given in favor of egoism? What arguments can be given against it? Are the arguments good ones? (If appropriate, discuss the attitudes of Hobbes and Rachels.) 4. Does doing the right thing ever lead to worse overall circumstances than doing the wrong thing? Consider this question in light of the ethnical positions of utilitarianism and consequential ism. Discuss the arguments that might be given in favor of consequential ism, and discuss the positions of Mill and Bentham. What arguments might be given against consequentialism? 5. Could a utilitarian respond to objections regarding justice, fairness and/or integrity? Clearly explain what utilitarianism is, and then discuss the general worries regarding justice, fairness and/or integrity, using specific examples. Then evaluate whether these arguments are convincing, and whether or not a utilitarian can possibly give a response. (If appropriate, discuss the readings by Nielsen and/or Williams.) 6. Can utilitarianism or other moral theory respond to objections regarding the importance of promises? Clearly explain what different moral theories-utilitarianism, various forms of deontology (Kant, Ross)-have to say about the ethics of keeping promises. Do you think any of the theories we’ve discussed does a better job than others in explaining the moral importance of keeping promises? Explain your answer and give examples. 7. Does goodness consist only in obtaining pleasure and avoiding pain? Consider the ethical theory of hedonism and its rivals, and consider arguments against hedonism. What alternative theories about the nature of goodness might be true instead? (If appropriate, discuss the readings by Bentham, Mill, Nozick and/or Parfit.) 8. Is goodness the same as satisfying a desire that someone has? Consider arguments for and against desire satisfactionism in axiology. Is it good when something satisfies one of our desires, even when it brings us no pleasure, or if we don’t even know about it? (If appropriate, discuss the readings by Mill, Nozick and/or Parfit.) 9. For an act to be right, must it be possible to will that everyone act the same way in similar circumstances? Consider Kant’s formulation of the categorical imperative, and arguments for and against it as a characterization of moral rightness. Discuss the readings by Kant and Feldman. 10. Does an act have to be done for the sake of morality, in order to be morally right or have moral worth? Discuss Kant’s position, and contrast with the attitudes held by most utilitarians. Consider several example cases, and argue for your own position on the issue. Suggestions: Organize your paper into three main sections. In the first section, clearly layout the issue under discussion and what possible views or positions someone might hold with regard to the issue. In the second section, layout the argument or arguments that will be your main focus. In the third section, consider possible responses to those argument(s), and possible responses to those responses. Play devil’s advocate throughout and try to consider how someone with a contrary position would respond to your position. Re-read the appropriate readings from the textbook, and discuss the positions of those n~m .. Create your own examples, possibly examples from your own life, but do not get lost m discussing details of the situations that are not relevant to the theoretical issue you’re discussing. Check your arguments for logical validity. Avoid superfluous introductory and concluding remarks. Legal Environment of Business

ASSIGNMENT 1 GUIDE: LAWS GOVERNING YOUR FUTURE PROFESSION WHO: This assignment is to be completed in groups of four to six students in the same major. WHAT: Students will undertake research on laws and rules relevant to their chosen profession/major. WHY: This assignment will help you understand how laws impact every business professional and not just lawyers. You will also need to learn about laws that apply to your chosen field when you work. (There are some questions and i will have to answer them based on rules, laws, regulations etc. according to Marketing manager in fitness industry in UAE.) https://www.naukrigulf.com/job-listings-Marketing-Manager-Executive-Fitness-Industry-Abu-Dhabi-Dubai-United-Arab-Emirates-Al-Ahli-Holding-Group-3-to-5-years-220216600005-?xz=1_25_5%2C1_20_5%2C1_21_5%2C1_24_5&jobId=220216600005&key=communication&keyar=&loc=&exp=&srchRank=1&srchId=145812917716240000&currPage=1&sort=relevance&freshness=&compType=&companyId=&partnercompany= We choose the topic according to our major, which is marketing. However we choose the field of fitness industry. Its a group project and my part has 3 questions. 1. Relevant laws [40 points]: What are the laws, rules, guidelines, etc. that govern or that are relevant to your chosen profession in UAE? If there are no specific UAE laws, you can pick relevant laws from Canada, US, or the UK and apply them to your profession. Points to consider: a) Is this profession regulated? By whom? In what way? For example, lawyers and doctors must go to law/med school and pass different exams and be members of professional law societies and medical associations in order to practice. b) Are there laws that tell you what your profession can or cannot do? For example, advertising laws will prohibit lying about your product. Describe these laws and summarize in general terms what these laws say. This is the most important part of this section. You do not have to read a 100 page statute/law, but look at the table of contents to find the most relevant parts and summarize them in general terms. You can also rely on secondary sources like news articles reporting on what advertising laws there are. Choose reliable sources, e.g. don’t quote a blog unless it is a blog of a law firm or a reputable organization or industry association. c) Are there voluntary or professional associations that provide guidelines of how your profession should act, i.e. codes of conduct? For example, law society is a professional organization for lawyers. Describe the association(s) and summarize in general terms what it/they do(es). -(based roughly on single-spaced, 1 inch margins, size 11 font). -Use lots of headings and sub-headings, but note this is NOT a short answer response. It is a report with different sections. What you will be graded on 1. Comprehensive explanations. Incorporation of and understanding of course concepts. 2. Organized, logical and analytical reasoning. Commercial and practical thinking. 3. Quality and depth of research and analysis. Do not rely on resources like Wikipedia or random blogs. Choose reliable sources such as government websites, law firm websites, or official organizations. 4. Other points for consideration: • Are there any unique characteristics about the UAE that impact the legal framework of your profession? For example, there are 200 nationalities here which could impact HR practices and anti-discrimination laws. As the UAE is only 44 years old and is an emerging market, it will not have developed or comprehensive legislation like in the US. • Consider the macro and economic environment, e.g. during the economic boom time, there was a lot of development and properties were being sold by unscrupulous developers which led to more robust real estate laws in the UAE. Sarbanes Oxley Act was enacted in the US after Enron and other corporate scandals. Anti-bribery and environmental laws arise out of corruption/environmental problems. • Life is not broken up into courses or chapters. Use your knowledge from other courses, work experience, and life in general to help you develop a comprehensive analysis relevant to the legal environment of your future job. 5. Reference list: Remember to include reference lists and have proper citation. a) Up to 20 points will deducted for inadequate citation. Proper citation in accordance with the APA Style: https://www.library.cornell.edu/research/citation/apa b) Direct quotes are to be included in quotation marks and if you are using someone else’s idea, cite it accordingly.

Common Core Standards

Begin your research. You will need 6 sources from a variety of media (Internet, electronic databases, books, videos). Once you have your research, you will need to evaluate each source and decide how you will incorporate this information into your research. You should have some idea how your paper will be organized before you select your sources. The prompts tell you what should be included in your report. After you evaluate each source you will summarize the main points of the article in an annotated bibliography. You will need to view and evaluate each source and summarize the main points (about 200 words for each summary). You will also need to briefly explain how this article will be used in the paper (about 50 words). The sources need to be arranged according to author’s last name using the proper MLA format. Once you have your research summarized, you are ready to begin putting the paper together. *CHOOSE FROM ONE OF THESE FOUR REPORTS LISTED BELOW!! Organization and Examples Introduction The recommendation report is an analytical report. Your introduction should provide background information and summarize the rhetorical situation. Much of the information for the introduction can come from your topic proposal. You will include two sections in the introduction: the rhetorical situation and the methodology. Your introduction should end with your proposal. History of the Problem-Causes/Effect Your second section in the recommendation report should discuss an historical perspective and definition of the problem. You should discuss the cause (major and contributing) and the effects of the problem showing why the problem is important and why something should be done to prevent or solve the problem. Recommendations This is the heart of the report. What did your research show to be the best way to prevent coastal erosion? Choose three to five recommendations that you can present to your client and describe each on in detail. Be sure to support your recommendations with examples and research. Conclusions/Discuss In your last section you review the results of the study and draw any conclusions from your research that will help your client decide the best actions to take. OR… Feasibility Report Introduction The feasibility report is an analytical report. Summary of the Proposed Project This section clearly outlines the proposed project. Talk about the who, what, when, where, and why. Define any terms and give a brief history of how the idea began and where it stands today. Review of Literature This is the heart of the report. What did your research show about the effectiveness of this idea? Give a summary of what you found in your research. Review the results what you have discovered. This section will differ depending on your topic. Benefits and Drawbacks Now is the time to summarize the benefits of going ahead with the project. Give the pros and the cons. If there are more cons than pros, start with the cons. If the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, start with the benefits. Conclusions/Discuss In your last section you review the results of the study and draw any conclusions from your research that will help your client decide the best actions to take. OR… Research Report The research report presents the results of a study. These reports stress cause and effect, showing how events in the past have developed into the current situation. This is also an analytical report. Introduction Again, you will begin your paper with an overview of the rhetorical situation. The research report topics are real, so the only fictional part of the is your position as the author and your fictional reader. You will need to include your research methodology and your research question in the introduction as well. History of the Problem The research question needs to outline how past events have led to the current situation, so looking into the history of the problem is very important. In this part of the paper, you will be presenting factual information but will not be getting into the causes. Causes and Effects In this section, you will explore the main cause and precipitating causes and effects and will tie your findings into what you presented in the history section. Discussion and Conclusions Here you will be drawing conclusions from your research and offering any recommendations for the future. OR… Incident Report (NEW) The incident report is based on a real life incident, so you do not need to make anything up except your name. Your position and the rhetorical situation are given in the prompt. Introduction The introduction needs to describe the rhetorical situation. Tell who you are and who has asked you to write this report. Briefly summarize the who, what, when, where, and why of the incident (in one or two sentences). Explain your methodology which will be research as well as personal experience and interviews. Since you were not on the scene, you will need to read eye witness reports and interviews and use that information in the paper. End with the purpose statement which is to tell what happened, why it happened and how to prevent it from happening again. Part I: Summarize what happened. Give a timeline of the events. You can get this from the articles on the incident. Part II: Explore why this event occurred. There will be more than one cause. The precipitating cause can be obvious, but you need to then get into some of the contributing causes which might be to look back in time and view the history. Part III: What can be done in the future to make sure this type of event does not re-occur? Back this up with research. Then it has to be designed a certain way. I will attach links to the file on the suggestions and tutorials she gave me to follow.

Rousseau’s “On the Social Contract”

Official assignment reads as follows: “Discuss and critique some of the major lines of thought in Rousseau’s The Social Contract. Be sure to focus your attention primarily on Book Two and on topics including sovereignty, the general will, the law, the legislator, and the people. Provide plenty of examples from the text book.” Now our text book is “Modern Political Thought, 2nd Ed” which I assume you do not have access to. But the part we are to cite is literally just a reprint of Rousseau’s work. So when you make citations, please just cite directly from Rousseau (ie; Social Contract, Book 2, chapter 4) and I will make the correlation to the text book.

Erik Anderson Case MBA Capstone

GUIDELINES FOR WRITING A CASE ANALYSIS [Use when there are no specific questions] Preparing the Case Before you begin writing, follow these guidelines to help you prepare and understand the case study: 1. Read and examine the case thoroughly • Take notes, highlight relevant facts, underline key problems. 2. Focus your analysis • Identify two to five key problems • Why do they exist? • How do they impact the organization? • Who is responsible for them? 3. Uncover possible solutions • Review course readings, discussions, outside research, your experience. 4. Select the best solution • Consider strong supporting evidence, pros, and cons: is this solution realistic? Writing the Case Once you have gathered the necessary information, a draft of your analysis should include these sections: 1. Introduction • Identify the key problems and issues in the case study. • Formulate and include a thesis statement, summarizing the outcome of your analysis in 1–2 sentences. 2. Background • Set the scene: background information, relevant facts, and the most important issues. (Avoid rehashing existing information. Background information should be brief) • Demonstrate that you have researched the problems in this case study. 3. Alternatives • Outline possible alternatives (not necessarily all of them) • Explain why alternatives were rejected • Constraints/reasons • Why are alternatives not possible at this time? 4. Proposed Solution • Provide one specific and realistic solution • Explain why this solution was chosen • Support this solution with solid evidence • Concepts from class (text readings, discussions, lectures) • Outside research • Personal experience (anecdotes) 5. Recommendations • Determine and discuss specific strategies for accomplishing the proposed solution. • If applicable, recommend further action to resolve some of the issues • What should be done and who should do it? Possible problems and how will the organization overcome them? Finalizing the Case After you have composed the first draft of your case study analysis, read through it to check for any gaps or inconsistencies in content or structure: Is your thesis statement clear and direct? Have you provided solid evidence? Is any component from the analysis missing?
