Service Quality and Operational Improvement- easyJet

This work is my re-assessment work, the first attempt didn’t achieve the pass standard. There are two comments by the two markers, I would like to ask for the paper to reach the standard that are mentioned in the feedback. Moreover, I would like to have a page of executive summary. The first comment is “Need a clearer statement of the hypothesis (which seems to be about how low Lean Thinking can be applied to improve service quality and operational efficiency at eassyJet); and for all the sources to be stated. If there two main deficiencies of the report are addressed, this assignment can achieve the Pass standard” The second commend is” Your project which is looking at an interesting area relevant to quality suffers from having a substantial number of statements which are not supported by academic references. It therefore ends up being very descriptive rather than analytical and could be improved considerable if you addressed this. It comes across as if you have not used your literature as active as you could and has relied uncritically on company information “

A Humanistic Approach to Learning a Number System

The Humanistic Mathematics Network defines two different approaches to the term “Humanistic Mathematics” which include a cloud of ideas around the notion of teaching mathematics humanistically, or “teaching as if students mattered,” and another cloud of ideas around the notion of mathematics as a humanistic discipline, or “mathematics as a human endeavor.” We present a unit plan on the topic of numbers and operations which includes elements of both notions. The unit is designed to teach as if students mattered by implementing research from educational and sociological disciplines and is designed to show mathematics as a human endeavor by implementation of historical research. We present different methods and ideas associated with numbers, and operations on those numbers used by past cultures, as well as unique and creative methods used by present day cultures in the hopes of promoting a deeper understanding of number and number flexibility. We then challenge the students to do research into the mathematics used by people from their own culture and then work in groups to creatively develop their own system of numbers, symbols and corresponding operations.

Education Visual learners represent approximately 65 percent of the population and visual aids in the classroom improve learning by up to 400 percent (Statistics on Visual Learners, 2012, 11). “Research has shown that visual learning theory is especially appropriate to the attainment of mathematics skills for a wide range of learners” (Murphy, 2013). Motivated by these statistics, all lessons in this unit will be presented visually. Comprehensive research studies determine that students “need to be engaged in a broad form of mathematics-using and applying methods, and representing and communicating ideas”

(Boaler, p. 83). By presenting mathematical number systems of past cultures, students will see mathematics as form of communication of ideas as well as a method by which particular cultures accomplished day to day realistic activities. Using mathematics to model real-world activity is a Standard for Mathematical Practice within the Common Core Standards for Mathematics (Common Core Standards, 2014). As students are presented with modern number systems such as binary and hexadecimal, they will see the real-world application to the computer age. A lesson on “tropical math” will also be presented as an additional method of using mathematics to represent and communicate ideas (Speyer, 2009).

History of Math Looking at math from a historical perspective shows, not only where math has been, but also how it came to be. The number

system developed by the Babylonians, a base 60 system, still influences our lives today (Berlinghoff, 2004). Our clocks use 60 minutes to denote an hour and 60 seconds to denote a minute. The Mayans also developed extensive numeracy. The Mayan system made use of groups of single digits followed by groups of 5. These were combined into vertical groups of 20 (except at the beginning when they used 18) (Ascher, 1991). Both of these groups used math for everyday activities as well as for leisure activities.
Historical perspectives on mathematics may be used to inform students about the different ways mathematics is used in their everyday life. It also presents the fact that mathematics has been a part of humanity for centuries. The two cultures, Babylonian and Mayan both illuminate that numbers do not have to look the way we typically see them. They may be represented with different bases, written in different ways, and with different symbols. This lesson can easily dovetail into a discussion about modern number systems, such as binary and hexadecimal which are cornerstones of the modern high-tech society.

Sociology ( this is my part !!)
The culminating activity of our project is to have the students work in groups to create a number system (numbers, symbols, and two operations). To optimize the performance of the group, the discipline of sociology will inform our practice in designing the groups. The following strategies will be used:
We will ensure that the groups we design are mixed-ability groups because we want students to learn, communicate, and respect each other (Boaler, 2008). We must also take into consideration that different genders learn math differently ( Boaler, 2008). By prompting the students to research the mathematics background of their own culture we hope to develop in the students a positive cultural and social identity. A positive cultural identity can be fostered by the students reading the world “without losing sight of their cultural community as a source of knowing, understanding, and taking action” (Murrell, p. 38).

• This is a solo project not a group project
• 5,000 Words – 10 Pages Not Counting Appendix or Letter of Transmittal
• An Expansion from 5W’s 2 H’s
• For Profit or Not for Profit
• Must be supported with research
• Must have a financial model that identifies key cost and revenue drivers
• Must have a compelling value proposition that speaks to an identifiable audience

Business Plan or Business Case
The term project can be constructed around either a business plan or a business case. Business plans are written in support

of starting a new venture or business. Business cases are written in support of an initiative within an existing venture or

business. (New product, new approach, new location etc.) Students are expected to choose plans or cases of enough

complexity to demonstrate their mastery of the course subject area. It is strongly recommended that you complete the first

two modules on value proposition and customer segments on the udacity How to Build a Startup – The Lean Launchpad course.

Workshops
For those who choose this options the Norman Newman Centre will host 3 one hour workshops to assist with the building of

HURIER Method

Assignment Directions for Chapters 5, 6 and 7
The HURIER model takes a behavioral approach to listening. Using it can help you to develop more effective listening

skills. The model focuses on the six key areas or stages of listening: hearing, understanding, remembering, interpreting,

evaluating, and responding. In this exercise, you will apply the HURIER model to a fictitious conversation to better

understand how each step works on its own and how they all work together in the listening process.
You have recently discovered that you have a long-lost relative living in another state, part of the U.S. you are not

familiar with, or even another country. Your relative has invited you to visit and stay for free. You are excited to go,

but soon discover he/she has many different meanings for the same words you use and it is a bit confusing.
For example, your long-lost relative tells you he plays football for Chelsea in England. You discover that football in

England and football in the United States are two very different sports.
Step One: Select a location in which you have never lived, but know something about from a friend, movie or other source.

An alternative is to select a place you have lived, but that was significantly different from where you live now and

compare the place you used to live to where you live now.
Discuss, in your paper, three different words that mean something different in that place you selected than they do where

you live (or where you live now) and explain the difference between the words. Identify which location has which meaning.
For example, when we want to take time off work in the United States, we typically say vacation. In England, when they take

time off of work, they call it a holiday. We, in the U.S., usually use the word holiday for special days on the calendar

year such as Thanksgiving or Christmas; whereas, holiday could be any day of the year in England.
Three Examples
Unmet (0 %)
Needs Improvement (50-69%)
Fair (70-79%)
Good (80-89%)
Excellent (100%)
Three words with different meanings in two different cultures are not explained in the paper.
The student attempts to satisfy the requirements, but perhaps only 1 or 2 examples are provided AND/OR the examples are not

correct AND/OR the examples are not clearly explained.
There are three examples of words that mean different things in two different cultures; however, the examples are not

clearly explained and are not supported with any evidence.
The student clearly identifies three different words that mean something different in their own and another’s culture. Both

cultures are identified and each example is correct. However, evidence and context are lacking.
The student clearly and completely identifies three different words that mean something different in their own language and

then within another culture. Each item is explained and context is provided. Significant evidence and specific examples are

included to support the student’s ideas.
Points Earned:__________/ 3.25 Possible Points
Step Two: In paragraph format in a 2-4 page paper, discuss how you would use the HURIER model to avoid a misunderstanding

with your long-lost relative while you are in the foreign location by selecting one of the words you discussed in step one

and putting it into a conversation format. Categorize the contents of the conversation into each of the listening stages

(HURIER).
For example: I was having a conversation with my cousin about going on holiday. In the first stage of the HURIER model,

hearing, I would be sure to pay attention in order to hear my relative talk. The best way to hear would be to make sure I

focus on my cousin and not allow anything in the background to impair my hearing. According to Floyd (2011), hearing is the

physical process that allows a person to recognize sound. In this case, I turned the TV down…
Keep in mind these requirements for content:
 An analysis of the conversation explaining how each step of the HURIER model was used: Hearing,
Understanding, Remembering, Interpreting, Evaluating and Responding. The steps of the model should
be addressed in order.
 Each item’s description and explanation will encompass a paragraph or two. Within this analysis of your
HURIER steps, define the individual steps, either by quoting or paraphrasing Floyd’s definitions.
 Include content regarding language from chapter 5, such as denotative and connotative meanings, and be
sure to define those ideas you use.
 Include content regarding nonverbal communication from chapter 6, as well as a definition of any ideas
that you include, either by quoting or paraphrasing Floyd’s definitions.
 Use specific examples from the conversation and relate them to each step in the model. Explain how
each example reflected the step you identified.
 Answer this question in the paper: Based on what you heard and saw, how did you know what the other
person meant?
