Diplomacy game and International Relations

This is a simulation essay based on the board game-Diplomacy, for International Relations Theory seminar.

The rules for the game are on the website also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diplomacy_(game).

you are expected to relate how the simulation brings out (or fails to illustrate) paradigms or theories of international relations, via the structure, rules, and conditions for victory in the game. The professor suggests to choose one paradigm and 2-4 of its theories (hint: balance of power and its effect is a theory, while realism is a paradigm containing within it many theories) that the games brings out well, and cover these at the beginning of the essay.

The following part of the essay should discuss some paradigms or theories which you feel are important to understanding the international system or world, but which are not reflected in the game. Present your ideas of what changes to the rules, structure or conditions for victory in the game (if any) could be made to better reflect these alternate views of international relations.

You may wish to conclude with some additional creative remarks on the simplifying nature of models, theories, paradigms and simulations in understanding an infinitely complex world, as well as the necessary elements of a “fun” game.

Pre-stressed Extruded Plastic Pipe

It is thought that putting the outside of a pipe in tension and the inside in compression should increase its resistance to being crushed by external forces. The belief comes from an experimental proof of concept study that shows that if a flat piece of material is bent, so that the outside is in tension and the inside is in compression, it has a greater resistance to impact and static forces applied to the outside of the curved surface. This patent applied for technique is the basis of the technology being marketed by start-up company Blast Absorption Systems limited.

Aims and objectives: The intention of this project is to ascertain whether an exterior in tension brings any benefit to extruded plastic pipes. Tension on the outside and compression on the inside could in theory be achieved by imposing a temperature difference between the inside and the outside of the pipe as it is extruded so that it solidifies on the inside first.

Deliverables Feasibility study and a report based on lab work, and if possible, experiments conducted in collaboration with a company that produces extruded plastic pipes and/or tubes or an institution that it able to produce them.
