Visual Rhetoric Essay

For this essay, simply select two different visuals depicting the same subject matter. The visuals can either be two versions of the same subject matter or two visuals addressing the same topic. You will include and cite these visuals (both in text and on a works cited page) in your essay. Then, introduce the subject and give any necessary rhetorical context your audience needs to engage with and understand your material. You may elect to use more than two visuals, but make sure this does not affect the specificity and depth in your exploration of the topic. The images you select should be closely related. Address the material present in each image and establish the artist/photographer, date of the image, and cultural, sociological, political, ethical, logical, and emotional content or implications. What messages do the images convey, both implicit and explicit? Also explore the images in comparison and contrast of one another. What does one emphasize that the other does not address? Is there a progression to notice or elements of cause and effect? How does the image serve to define the subject? How is this similar to or different from other images on the same topic? Are there positive or negative connotations to the image? Does the image call for an action? Is the image infamous or does it compel controversy? Does the image contain words and how do the words engage with or change the message of the image? Again, these are concepts addressed throughout the chapters of Writing Arguments (particularly Chapter 9), so access the text for a review of this material. Writing Arguments also contains information about addressing visual rhetoric and images. Your essay should be a minimum of 1,000 words and include the images you address (you will be graded on the effective incorporation of the images and overall page layout in your submission). Your essay may contain more images, but the word count must be met. The essay is to be in MLA format (see The Little Seagull for a review) and must include a works cited page citing the images you use. You must also cite any background research you include while addressing the images in your essay. The typical works cited page for this assignment should contain no less than four sources (two for your images and two for research pertaining to those images). Remember, images and works cited pages do not count as part of the word count (length) of your essay. You may even choose to cite ideas and concepts from Writing Arguments. Make sure the addition of the images to your essay does not disrupt the proper MLA format and margins. Your images need to be effectively integrated in with your writing, so consider overall size and clarity as part of your draft’s appearance.

The website blog (a public argument): Requirements: ? Create your blog on weebly.com or any other website building tool you are familiar with. Your website blog will include the website, a blog article, and some relevant visual that helps the persuasiveness of the argument. ? Incorporate research (minimum of three reliable written sources and two of your own interview sources) from the Research Proposal (ask me if you find other sources that are a better fit). ? Citations are required (MLA, APA, or in a “website link” style appropriate to the genre). Remember that citing your sources improve your credibility as well. ? Formatting appropriate to blog genre: length (approximately 500-1000 words), line spacing (single-spaced, no indent), etc. The Visual Part of bringing your audience to your side and communicating your idea will be with a combination of text and images. Your essay will be assessed for focus, evidence & organization, style & expression, as well as adherence to conventions of formatting & citations for a blog genre. ???? Steps in the process: ? Identify specifics of your rhetorical situation (target audience, speaker, purpose, context). ? As you imagine your audience in your mind, compose your writing in a register and tone appropriate for the persuasive effect. ? Spend most of your time writing the blog article, which should include both visuals and text that will bring your readers to doing or believing or understanding what you want them to. Other important suggestions: ? Remember the strategies of rhetorical effectiveness analyzed in Unit One. Use them! Establish trust by showing knowledge of and genuine interest in your topic. ? Some of your credibility can be through your experience and through the sources you found in Unit Two: provide evidence from your research and explain your reasoning; suit your new approach to your intended audience and purpose. ? Don’t assume everyone agrees with you. Consider objections that might be raised in relation to your argument. How will you find common ground, concede, and/or refute their objections effectively? ? The information should be organized so that your reader (s) can make sense of it, even if some of the information comes in the form of graphics, your own videos, or even comics. ? Aim for succinctness (conciseness), accuracy of detail, clarity of thought and expression.

Research Utilization

Paper #2: Research Utilization (Research/Evidence-based Practice/Global Health) Paper Paper Requirements: Using what you have learned from your assigned reading, please write a review of the literature paper using APA format. This paper is due April 4 by 11:59 PM. This paper will include Appraisal Synopses of four nursing research studies. (You will learn how to do a Research Appraisal Synopsis for your Learning Activities. This is explained in Chapter 16 of your textbook, and a completed Sample Appraisal is on pages 401-404). After deciding on a clinical topic that is relevant to global health, you will access the FIU Library and conduct a Literature Review on your topic for Part B of your paper. You will select four studies and complete a Synopsis Appraisal for each study. The research study articles selected for each Synopsis must be of original nursing research studies, not integrative review articles, and the studies must have been published in a peer-reviewed journal. Review Chapter Three on reading research articles before selecting the four studies for this paper. At least TWO of the four research study articles MUST BE written by nurses and published in a peer-reviewed nursing journal. At least ONE of the two nursing research studies must be about nursing in another country (non-USA). The purpose of the paper is to describe a global health problem that can be explored through research, discuss how this health problem is applicable in both the United States and other countries of the world, and critique four research studies that have been done on this topic. This is a scholarly paper, written as if it were a “Review of the literature” article published in a nursing journal. DO NOT use first person voice. The paper should be 6-8 pages (maximum of 8 pages, not counting the title page, abstract page and reference list). You must use a minimum of 4 research articles for your paper. You may use any of the nursing research journals from your weekly assigned websites. The research study articles will be discussed in the text of the paper, properly cited in the paper, and then properly listed on your reference page. APA format for citing in the text and then citing on the reference pare are required. Use what you have learned about research methods, research studies, and how to read a research article, to select your research study articles. Refer back to Chapter 3 – “Starting Point”- and use those criteria to determine if you have correctly selected a research study article. You will receive or lose points on correct selection of a research study article versus a non-research or review article. At least TWO of the four research study articles MUST BE written by nurses and published in a peer-reviewed nursing journal. At least ONE of the two nursing research studies must be about nursing in another country (non-USA). PART A. The first part of the paper should clearly define the global health problem, and discuss why it is important for nursing (why you have chosen this topic to write about). Also discuss how this problem is viewed in the United States and then how it is viewed in at least one other country. For example, if you discuss elevated blood pressure in adults, you may discuss guidelines for defining hypertension in the United States (reference the article where the guidelines came from, using APA format). Then find an article from another country and discuss how hypertension is described in that country (reference the article using APA format). PART B. The second part of the paper will include an Appraisal Synopsis for each of the research studies that you have selected on your topic. This part of the paper will inform the reader about what is known about this problem in the United States population and in at least one other country of the world. For example, in the topic of hypertension, you may choose four research study articles done by nurse researchers that looked at such issues as interventions to improve medication adherence, or adherence to a prescribed diet, or the effect of an exercise intervention in reducing elevated blood pressure. Set up your paper using the following format: Use the heading Part B for this section. Then use the subheading Study #1; Nursing research Study in the USA. Then appraise and critique the article following the components of Synopsis (textbook pages 401-402).Type the study name, author(s), year of publication, journal and pages, using APA format (same format as will be used on your reference page). Then do a Synopsis of the article. Conclude by discussing implications for practice, policy or further research. Next use the subheading Study #2-Nursing Research Study Non-USA. Follow the same instructions as for Subheading Study #1. Next use the subheading Study #3 (this can be a nursing research study from USA or non-USA). Follow the same instructions as for Subheading Study #1. Next use the subheading Study #4 (this can be a nursing research study from USA or non-USA). Follow the same instructions as for Subheading Study #1. Part C: This is the conclusion of your paper, and summarizes the key points that you have addressed in your paper.

Piktochart image of the button to publish work. •Once you have created your JPEG file, open up the assignment in your course. •Add one paragraph to address the following. Data is often vulnerable to misrepresentation when converted from text to visuals. Through the experience of manipulating data into a visual format, describe how you see the risks of the data you have worked with being misrepresented. •Type your full APA 6 formatted article citation in the space provided. •Remember to add the direct web link so that I can access the article. •Next, attach your infographic to your assignment. •Submit it to the assignment dropbox for evaluation. In public health, effectively conveying messages is instrumental to educating the populace. This activity introduces you to one way to communicate data and key ideas, and that is using an infographic. It is likely that you have seen infographics before. Here is an example: The infographic shows statistics about food insecurity in the United States in a visual manner. There are four quadrants, each depicting a different aspect of food insecurity according to statistical information. One quandrant contains a map of the US with colors associated with highest and lowest rates of food insecurity. Another quandrant shows rates of food insecurity over years 1998 to 2008, and indicates the percentage of households experiencing food insecurity. A third quadrant shows US households food security status, indicating forty-two percent of households below the poverty line are food insecure, twenty-one percent of households with children are food insecure, and seventeen point seven percent of households in principal cities are not food secure. The fourth quadrant shows a comparative bar chart with key indicators of food insecurity and includes such things as worried that food would run out, purchased food did not last, skipped a meal, did not eat for a whole day, and so on. Statistics taken from the Household Food Insecurity in the United States Report, 2008, by the Food Assistance and Nutrition Research Program. In the readings for this module you will learn about several prominent health disparities experienced by vulnerable populations – disparities irrefutably tied to geography. Negative and often deadly health conditions are disproportionately seen among the vulnerable. These health conditions may be caused either directly by environmental hazards or characteristics of the community/neighborhood. What are some of these factors that influence health? We will have an opportunity to explore answers to this question in this module. As you can see in the above example, an infographic is a visually and aesthetically pleasing way to represent data. Infographics package data in a way that tells a story without the observer needing to sift through a lot of text. They make the data accessible and striking. Here are additional examples of infographics. Scroll down to the bottom of the web page to find more. As you might also suspect, infographics can be used to manipulate the data! They can be persuasive in their simplicity and can readily be used to misrepresent the source information. Beware of data cherry picking!! Your assignment is to make an infographic.
